The Cutest Puppy Ever Part II

…and so begins part II of the Cutest Puppy Ever…If you missed part I then check out our first contestant for the cutest puppy ever by following this link:

The Cutest Puppy Ever Part I

A quick recap: Part I of the Cutest Puppy Ever featured my rescue puppy, an Australian Shepherd mix named Linus. He was an adorable little black puppy rescued from the Carson shelter.

Contestant number II is Princess Buttercup. I wrote a little information about her and included her portfolio of photos:

The Cutest Puppy Ever – Princess Buttercup

For those of you who don’t know Princess Buttercup comes from the movie the Princess Bride. She was the runt in the litter so she just seemed like she was the little princess. Now that I look back at these pictures she was tiny compared to Linus (you can compare the two pictures of them on the back porch). When we picked her up from the Riverside shelter they said she was only 4 weeks old. She might only be a few days older than that in these pictures. I’d heard that puppies from the Riverside shelter could be tenth generation mixed breed. From the look of Buttercup I’d say she’s a German Shepherd mix.

Princess Buttercup was so cute and petite, but she definitely held her own when rough housing with the other puppies in her litter.

The Cutest Puppy Ever Part I

Have you ever thought “my puppy has to be the cutest puppy ever!” That’s what I think and say to myself every time I bring home a new puppy.

Now you might be wondering “how many puppies have you brought home?” I was thinking about this the other day and realized in the past few years I’ve brought home ten of the cutest puppies I’ve ever seen. I raised each puppy for at least two months…some were adopted to great homes and others were/are in training to be guide dogs.

I decided to write a series of articles on these ten puppies including adorable pictures to let you decide which one of my puppies was/is the cutest puppy ever!

The Cutest Puppy Ever – Linus

You’ve all heard about Linus my rescue dog, but just in case here’s a little recap of his story. I found Linus searching the Petfinder.com website and visited the Carson shelter to see him and his sister. Both dogs were adorable, but I winded up taking Linus home and have never regretted my decision.

Linus is an Australian Shepherd mix and we think he may have some Labrador Retriever, Chow Chow, and possibly some Husky mixed in. He was approximately two months old when we picked him up and probably around the same age in these pictures.

Pet Evacuation Safety Tips

In light of the recent fires in Southern California it has come to my attention that I should have an emergency evacuation plan for my dogs. One of our readers sent us a link to an LA Times article that lists a few safety precautions to help prepare us and our pets for a disaster evacuation. Here’s the list from the LA Times article: Southland wildfires: When pets must be evacuated:

Pet Evacuation Safety Tips

Disaster officials recommend that you put together an emergency preparedness plan specifically for your pets. Various organizations such as Homeland Security, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and the American Red Cross recommend the following:

  • Prepare a pet emergency supply kit. In watertight containers, pack at least three days of food and water for each pet and include medicine and veterinary records, first aid kit, collars with ID tags, a harness or leash, a crate or a pet carrier, and sanitation supplies such as plastic bags, disinfectants and paper towels.
  • Preselect shelter sites and resources. Prepare a list of phone numbers of local animal shelters and hotels and motels that take pets. Include the names and numbers of friends or family who can temporarily care for the pets. Have a buddy system with a good neighbor who would be willing to check on your animals in case you’re not home.
  • At first warning of an evacuation, act quickly. Bring pets into the house so you don’t have to look for them if you must leave quickly. Try to call ahead to arrange emergency shelter for your pet. Make sure your dog or cat has current identification.
  • If pets must be left behind … alert local animal control and, if necessary, give animal control officers permission — and keys — to enter your home to rescue the pets.

One other point I remember hearing/seeing/reading somewhere was that you should have a pet emergency card on your refrigerator alerting rescue officials of the pets in your house, their names, and any additional information. This can be very important information as I’m sure many animals would hide from:

  • A firefighter in full uniform
  • A stranger
  • When scared by natural disasters (fires, earthquakes, hurricanes…etc.)

If rescue officials know that their are two cats and two dogs in the house then they could look for all four pets.

Does anyone else have helpful pet evacuation safety tips?

We also recently experienced the horrible earthquakes and tsunami’s in Japan and the horrific aftermath.  If you’re looking for some more information on safety then take a look at our article on Earthquake Safety Tips For Your Pets.

Cat Loves His Roomba

Back to back days with articles about cats. What is this a blog about cats?

Not to worry…we’re still a blog about dogs and puppies. However, when I come across hilarious, adorable, or interesting stories I like posting it here on my blog. Until I start a “Kitty In Training” blog or “Pet In Training” blog all of my favorite videos, images, and articles will show up here…(don’t worry we’ll focus on dogs and puppies 99% of the time).

This post is actually for my mom. She loves her Roomba and she loves her cats.

Sylmar Fire Causes Guide Dog Evacuation

Over the weekend the fire in Sylmar, CA came very close to the Guide Dogs of America headquarters. Here’s the story that Fox News reported a couple days ago:

One of the many places threatened by the fires this weekend was the California headquarters of the Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar, but thanks to numerous dedicated volunteers about a hundred Guide Dogs of America were evacuated safely. Christina Gonzalez was in Sylmar with the amazing story.

Here’s a link to the video clip on the story: Several Guide Dogs Evacuated During Fire in Sylmar.

I first heard about the fire and evacuation this past Saturday and was told that the dogs were safely evacuated. By the time I actually spoke to anyone in our Guide Dog group to offer assistance I was told that hundreds of volunteers already went to help GDA and all the dogs were doing just fine.

Dog Versus Cat

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Dog Versus Cat post. Here’s one of our posts from earlier in the year: Kitty Vs. Puppy – The Age Old Battle.

While scrolling through my RSS reader I came across this great picture from the PuppyParade. I’m not too sure where it originated from…the flickr post just mentions that he’s not sure of it’s origins either. However, I do agree that it’s too funny not to share.

I’m not sure if this is real or fixed up with Photoshop. Either way what a great photo:

Dog Versus Cat

Here’s a link back to the original flickr user Nikko Myers.

You have to love the look on the puppies face. I’m going to have to tally the score at cats 1 dogs 0.

Do you have any great photos like this you’d like to share? If so, send me a message through my contact form and I’ll do my best to add it to the site.

The First Puppy In Training Blog Carnival

We tried to get our first Puppy In Training Blog Carnival off the ground last week, but unfortunately as I mentioned the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival was Postponed. That brings us to today…our first ever Puppy In Training Blog Carnival! We are featuring four articles from blogs and websites around the globe (possibly).

So without further adieu…here it is!

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival

50 Dating Tips, Tools, and Resources for Every Kind of Animal Lover
Our first article comes from the Soul Mating blog and features an article on dating tips for animal lovers. As a single person this is a great resource for finding that perfect animal lover. Lots of great ideas and some things I never even thought about. As a dog lover and with three dogs in my house I’ve often wondered what would happen if I started seriously dating another dog lover with several dogs in her house. It would be kind of like the Brady Bunch don’t you think?

Obama’s Disastrous Gaffe-Laden Press Conference
I’m sure you’ve all heard about Obama’s promise of a puppy to his daughters after the election. Here’s an article from Jon Swift’s blog about Obama’s promise to buy his daughters a puppy after the election has cost Obama quite a bit of support.

GRR, ARGH
Who hasn’t had their dog not obey commands or sometimes completely ignore you. After years of obedience how can the word “Come” now mean “Run away”. In Kristan Hoffman’s blog she talks about how her 1 year old Border Collie/Jack Russell/Beagle mix disobeys her and she offers to give him away to her readers.

Video Jug Dogs
I received this submission and after much consideration decided to include it in the carnival. Although this is not an article, but instead a useful video resource. The site features many dog videos including dog training, dog foods, dog health, and dog fashion. All videos are free as long as you can deal with the embedded advertisements.

That’s it for this edition of Puppy In Training Blog Carnival. If you’re interested in submitting an article for our next blog carnival you can either contact me through the Puppy In Training contact form or submit and article through the Blog Carnival website.

How Do I Subscribe To The Puppy In Training RSS Feed?

Have you ever heard of an RSS Feed? Just this morning I heard that only 10% of web surfers know how to subscribe to RSS feeds. That means approximately 90% of you probably do not know what an RSS feed is.

Today I wanted to write a short post about RSS which stands for Real Simple Syndication. First watch this 3 minute video from the Common Craft called RSS in Plain English:

What Is RSS?

Now that you know all about RSS what should you do about it? As mentioned in the video there are a few steps you need to take:

That’s all you have to do to sign up for your RSS Feed Reader. Now all you have to do is subscribe to feeds by clicking the little orange button.

You can see my RSS feed in the upper right corner of any page on my website. It looks like this:

You can also see from my feed button how many readers I currently have. The image above shows 79 total readers as of this post…hopefully by the time you read this article it’s in the thousands :)

Click on the RSS button and add the Puppy In Training feed to your Google Reader. Now the next time you visit Google Reader you’ll see my website and any new articles in your Google Reader.

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival Postponed

Unfortunately the first edition of the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival had to be postponed. Our official first carnival will be held next Tuesday November 18th 2008.

What Is A Blog Carnival?

The Puppy In Training Blog Carnival is a weekly (this may change to monthly) published blog post that contains links to other blogs dealing with the topic of: ” Sharing the latest puppy in training tips and news. All dogs and puppies are welcome!” I’ll also include a short summary/review of the submitted post along with a link back to the blog.

If you’re interested in sharing one of you’re blog posts with the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival then you can either submit to our blog carnival web page at blogcarnival.com or just leave me a message either in the comment section of this post or send me information through my contact form. My Friend Has Spent Over $10,000 On His Dog!

Stetson and I took another trip to the veterinarian yesterday and it cost us $150…eeeekkk.  It got me thinking on my drive home: How much money do you spend on your dog? I know some people buy their dogs lavish gifts and others have very expensive vet bills I’m somewhere in between where I do get my dogs some silly gifts (like Halloween costumes) and also spend the mandatory dollar on vet bills.

My Friend Spent Over $10,000 On His Dog!

I guess I shouldn’t complain about my dog expenses.  A friend of mine has spent over $10,000 on vet bills alone.  Here are a few of his vet visits.

  • As a puppy his American Staffordshire Terrier had diarrhea and pushed so hard when pooping that he pushed out his rectum – they said it looked like a pink bubble coming out of his butt.
  • At about 2 years of age his dog tore his ACL.  At the time they told him there was an 80% chance he’d tear his other ACL.
  • At 3 years of age he tore his other ACL.
  • He’s also had miscellaneous other visits to the vet totaling over $10,000

Money I Spend On My Dog

I thought back to the past 6 months or so and tried to come up with a dollar amount I’ve been spending on my dogs. Here’s what I found:

Approximately Monthly Expenditures for my 3 dogs:

  1. Dog Food: (2 bags a month): $80
  2. Dog Treats: $10
  3. Dog Toys: $10
  4. Heartworm Medicine (2 dogs): $10
  5. Flea Medicine (3 dogs): $10
  6. Vaccinations: $10
  7. Other Expenses: $20
  8. Veterinarian visits: $50

The grand total for my three dogs is $200 a month. It’s probably a little higher then that as I’m not thinking about. This is the cost for three young healthy dogs. Stetson is the only regular visitor to the Veterinarian as he seems to have ear and skin issues about every other month. Linus is still a young pup turning 4 years old a couple days ago and he’s been very healthy and strong. Derby has more expenses because he’s still just a puppy at only 6 months old, but Guide Dogs of America covers all of his vet bills.

Should You Get A Dog Keep Expenses In Mind?

The poor economy, people’s lack of funds, and foreclosures are forcing people to relinquish their dogs. We talked a little about the economy and the difficulty with dog adoptions at the local shelters in Tough Times For Cat And Dog Adoptions.

If you’re interested in getting a dog beware that there are expenses (sometimes significant) involved. I feel like I’ve been very lucky with my three dogs as they’ve all been very healthy. As I mentioned earlier I have a friend who’s dog has cost him well over $10,000 in vet bills and surgeries and that was all before the age of 4 years old.

What about you…how much do you spend on your dog? Is there anything I’m missing on my list?
