Inmates Show The Importance Of Training And Dog Adoption

We’ve seen other programs where inmates train service dogs benefiting not only the individual receiving the dog, but also the helps in the rehabilitation of the inmate.  Dogs sure are wonderful creatures.  These dogs are making a significant impact on not only one, but two individuals.  Canine Support Teams is one example of inmates raising service dogs.

Adoptable Dogs Well Prepared By Inmates

However, the article I read today was about inmates helping to train dogs from the local shelter. Va inmates help prepare dogs for adoption tells how inmates are helping to train and prepare dog for adoption from the local Orange County Animal Shelter.  Once again this is a great way to, in this case help:

  • The Inmate – the program helps in rehabilitation through training and preparing the dogs.  And as mentioned in the article it gives the inmates “…something to worry about besides themselves”
  • The Dog – Dogs that are not socialized, trained, and basically not prepared for adoption will often be euthanized in overcrowded shelters.
  • The Adopter – The person who adopts the dog definitely benefits from the “leg up” these dogs are given by receiving extra attention, training, and grooming.

I’m always happy to hear about programs like these that benefit our sheltered dogs.  The more dogs we can save the better.

Have you ever heard of other programs like the Va inmates help prepare dogs for adoption?  If so, let us know about it in the comments section below.

How Would You Advertise Guide Dogs?

Dog Telephone Pole AdsHow about Street Pole Ads?  It wasn’t my first choice either, but then again I can’t say that I would know the best way to market and advertise a business in South Africa.  Once again sifting through my RSS feed I came across an interesting article on Street Pole ads highlights SA Guide Dogs plight.  I seemed kind of odd to me because when I think of advertising and Street Poles I think of Lost Dogs and Cats or maybe the odd local band playing their upcoming gig.

The street pole ads are a major part of their marketing campaign, but not the only component.  There are two campaigns which aim to maintain the profile of South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (SAGA) as well as raise funding for the organization. Here’s a little clip from their website:

Together the two campaign elements comprise a national media campaign that synergises across radio, television, print, cinema, Street Pole Ads and billboards – all of which have been sponsored by various players in SA’s media arena.

As I mentioned earlier street pole advertising would probably not be the cornerstone of my marketing campaign.  However, maybe this is the best way to advertise in South Africa.

What about you?  How would you advertise a Guide Dog program?

By the way, link building is a good way to build traffic to your website.  Press releases and articles are a great way to generate links back to your website thus creating more traffic to a website like the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind.

So You Want To Be A Dog Trainer Review

A few weeks ago I ordered a pile of books from Amazon.com one of them being So You Want to be a Dog Trainer.  I’m not really thinking about becoming a dog trainer I just enjoy reading new information about dog training, dog careers, dog training certifications, Dog Training Schools, Online Dog Training etc.

This book is a very short read, but filled with all kinds of useful information that your normal dog training books don’t usually have.  As you might have guessed from the title this book is about how to become a dog trainer and doesn’t really cover dog training techniques.

So You Want To Be A Dog Trainer Review

I love books I can read in a day or two because whether or not it’s a good book I will finish it.  The giant tomes that go on and on whether or not they are exciting books or boring text I often don’t finish.  And lets face it the majority of dog training books available are dry and slow reads.

So You Want to be a Dog Trainer was short and to the point.  I finished it off in a couple days and found it very informative.  Some of the most interesting points were:

  • Becoming a dog trainer is not just about training dogs, but about training people.
  • What kind of dog trainer do you want to be – you don’t have to be an expert in all areas of dog training maybe you just want to teach group lesson basic obedience.
  • Dog Training Schools – the book talks about many different places where you can get an education in dog training.
  • Dog Training Certification – there really isn’t one.
  • The in’s and out’s of setting up your dog training business

There are many other great points throughout the book, but I’m going to save some of that for a more detailed description I plan on putting on the Online Dog Training Schools website.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but there are some things I didn’t like about it.  If you want to hear my negative commentary on this book then check out Online Dog Training Schools in the next few days where I will put up a more comprehensive review or just subscribe to the RSS feed and you will receive the review through your RSS reader.

If you’re already interested in getting this book I suggest heading over to Amazon.com to get your copy today.  Here’s a link:

Doberman + Laser Pointer Reminds Me Of Older Sibling Torture

I was surfing through Facebook last night and came across this great little video of a Doberman Pinscher, Laser Pointer, and I’m not certain, but I’m going to say someone’s younger brother.  As I mentioned in the title this little video reminds me of me, my older brother, and the torture he put me through when we were kids.

Unfortunately, I had some issue downloading the animation, but just click this link: Doberman and Laser Pointer or click on the still image below:

Doberman Pinscher vs The Laser Pointer

Doberman and The Laser Pointer

Did you like that video?  I feel bad for the kid relaxing on the couch.  I also feel bad for the Doberman with his surgically cropped ears.  Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this little video

Have you seen any funny dog videos?  If you have send us  the link and maybe we’ll add it to the Puppy In Training website.

Sleep Running Dog

You’ve probably seen your dog dreaming in his sleep.  I sometimes here Linus whimpering or get the occassional kick in the face from Stetson when he tries to run in his sleep.  However, have you ever seen an actual Sleep Running Dog?  One that stands up and actually starts running in his sleep.  Whether you have or have not seen a Sleep Running Dog you have to check out this video of Bizkit the Sleep Running Dog:

Bizkit The Sleep Running Dog

I witnessed this for the first time last week on my iPhone.  During hockey lockeroom talk every one was a buzz about Bizkit the Sleep Running Dog.  I had to see it so in an instant I turned on my iPhone, clicked the youTube button and there was Bizkit running into the wall.

My advice for Bizkits owners: Don’t let him sleep in a room where there are breakable objects.

Does your dog sleep walk or run?
