I was going through my google reader when I came across this article from Pawcurious titled 3 Dumb Things that Dog Owners Do (That Make Us All Look Bad). I immediately clicked on the link to see if I agreed with Dr. V’s short list (I did).

I’m not going to tell you everything on the list, but I will tell you my personal #1 Dumb Thing That Dog Owners Do and that’s not picking up dog poop! My #1 pet peeve was number 2 on Dr. V’s list.

For some reason I’ve been talking about dog poop a lot lately. I spoke about the biodegradable dogs just a few days ago and before that I wrote an article about the many different kinds of green dog poop bags you can buy to make your pets more eco-friendly.

However, today it’s more about venting then the dog poop.

Why Do Dog Owners Not Pick Up Their Dog Poop?

Dublin Being A Good Boy And "Getting Busy" Outside

It’s sad, but I ask myself this question daily as I walk my dog through my neighborhood. I live in a nice affluent area and you would think that people would have the consideration to pick up after their dogs especially when they are pooping right outside my front door!

Here are a few other reasons why dog owners should pick up their dog’s poop:

Not picking up dog poop contributes to the source water contamination.

If you’re caught not picking up your dog poop you could get fined anywhere from $10 – $2,000. Is it really worth it?

Pick up your dog poop! It’s not fertilizer! It contains bacteria and viruses that can be harmful to people and pets alike.

Those are just a few reasons, but most of all just be considerate to your fellow neighbors.

Don’t forget to read about the other dumb things that dog owners do at Pawcurious.

I often times think about what I would do if I caught someone not picking up after their dogs right in front of my house. Mostly just fantasies from chewing out the owners all the way to repackaging the dog poop, putting it in a paper bag, lighting it on fire and ringing the neighbors door bell (I know I’ve been watching too much Billy Madison).

Anyhow I’m curious, have any of you caught a neighbor not picking up his dog’s poop on your own lawn or anywhere in the neighborhood? What did you do? I’m interested to see how far people have gone when someone leaves dog poop on their lawn. Tell us about it in the comment section below.

I sat down today and started reading over my guide dog puppy training manual. It’s something I like to do from time to time just to review all the basic things I should be teaching my puppy. Another reason why I started reading again is because we recently received a new puppy raiser manual which I must say is awesome! Not to slight the old puppy raiser manual, but the new one is much better organized and it makes it very easy to follow what we should be teaching our puppies at each stage of their development.

Today we’re going to talk about the 9 puppy training commands to teach your guide dog puppy.

Puppy Raising Commands To Be Taught To Your Puppy

Big Stetson and Little Dublin - Lab Puppies

The commands we teach our puppies are very basic obedience commands. In fact not only should a guide dog puppy know these commands, but so should your personal pet. After all don’t we all want to have a well behaved dog?

Here’s what GDA has to say:

Below is a list of commands that all GDA puppies should be taught. It is important to note that GDA does not expect puppies to learn all these in the first 4 weeks they are home with you. By the time your puppy is 9 months of age, he should have a good understanding of these commands, and be able to demonstrate the behaviors for anyone, with mild to moderate distractions present…”

Sit – probably the most command. Basically getting your puppy’s butt to hit the ground.

Down – when your puppy is young it’s easiest to get them into the “sit” position then teach “down”. Basically the whole body is flat to the ground.

Stay – when you teach a guide dog “stay” they need to stay in the exact position you left them. That means if they were sitting they must remain sitting if they were standing then they must remain in a stand.

Come – we also use our dog’s name the same as we use the command “come”. Basically it means that your dog no matter what he is doing should stop and come to the person who says “Come”.

Heel – we work on loose leash heeling. Basically your dog walks beside you on the left side and their front heel is aligned with your heel.

Leave It – a very important command. Most pups like to pick stuff up off the table or floor. The “leave it” command tells them not to touch it.

Get Busy – this is the command we teach our pups when it’s time for them to go potty.

Stand – I always thought it would be tough to teach “stand”, but it is not. Basically when our pups are in a “sit” or “down” position “stand” tells them to get up and stand on all fours

Formal Come – this is probably the only command that most people would not teach their dogs. It’s a little difficult to explain, but when you tell your dog to “come” he should come towards you on your left side, walk past your left, make a u turn back towards you and sit next to your left side. Much easier to watch then explain with words.

Those are the 9 commands your puppies should know. Remember to be patient, persistent, and consistent when teaching these commands. Just like it says in the GDA handbook don’t expect your puppy to learn these things in the first 4 weeks. It takes time before he will understand and execute these commands consistently.

What commands do you teach your puppies or dogs? Do you go beyond these basic obedience commands? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

Yes! It’s definitely very important to puppy proof your house before you bring home a puppy. In fact I have a 7 point checklist for puppy proofing my house that I go through every time before I bring home a new puppy.

When I rewind back 7 years and think about bringing home my first puppy, Linus for the first time I was ill-prepared. There were many things I should have done before making the final decision to bring home a new puppy. And this is from someone who did do some preparation including reading the Puppies For Dummies (affiliate link) book…twice! Also, I did not bring home the first adorable puppy I came across and I actually did a ton of research on different breeds before picking Linus. I also had a veterinarian and a puppy trainer already picked out for my new puppy.

Dublin On The Job Training

However, here are a few things I didn’t do:

I did not puppy proof the house.

I did not get puppy supplies for my new pup.

I did not prepare for sleepless nights especially my puppy’s first night at home.

I did not have an 24 hour emergency vet.

Make Sure You Puppy Proof Your House

By the time I decided to volunteer as a guide dog puppy raiser I made sure I puppy proofed my house before my home interview. Every time I get a new puppy I go through the short ritual of crawling around the house and yard on my hands and knees looking for potential dangers. I even mention this in the Dublin’s first Puppy In Training TV Video:

You probably already know that it’s extremely important to puppy proof your home for your puppy’s safety as a puppy is liable to pick up just about any and everything off the ground and eat it or chew on it. Here’s a step by step guide on how I go about puppy proofing my house before bringing home a new puppy:

The Basics – My first round of cleaning is just the basics. Clean the house. Pickup everything off the floor. Vacuum. Mop and clean the floor (make sure you don’t use harsh chemicals that might irritate your puppy). Dust the house…you know the basics!

Crawling the Floor – After the basics I get on my hands and knees and crawl all over the house inside and out to see from the same perspective as my puppy. You can often find hidden dangers this way. Keep your eye out for anything on the floor. Also watch out for electrical cords and wall sockets (your pup may want to chew on these).

In Home Workers – If you have workers who come over (cleaning people, gardeners, pool men, etc.) make sure to check that they didn’t inadvertently drop anything or leave doors ajar.

The Garage – there’s lots of dangerous stuff in the garage. Be very careful with antifreeze. Pets like the taste, but it’s absolutely deadly. I’ve had several friends lose their cats to antifreeze. Always check for leaks. Other harmful things for your puppy commonly found in the garage are pesticides, fertilizers, snail bait, batteries, cleaners and solvents, motor oil, gasoline, craft glues and cement mix.

The Bathroom – Do not store dangerous items like medications and chemicals under the sink. Move anything like toilet and drain cleaner up and away from the toilet. Keep the toilet seat down, put trash up (or get one with a lid), and close shower/bathtubs. Some people often put cleaners in the toilet that turn the water blue. I never use these because even if it’s a rule to close the toilet lid not everyone in the house may follow through and I don’t want one of my pups or dogs drinking the chemical filled water on accident.

The Living Area – Do your best to hide all wires and cables. Make sure all paper shredders are unplugged. There are many toxic plants, make sure if you have any toxic plants they are out of reach from your dogs and puppies.

The Kitchen – Some of the major kitchen hazards include coffee grounds, spoiled foods, coffee grounds, bacteria and sharp objects. Cover all trash cans. Remove anything toxic from under the sink. Store all foods on high shelves out of the reach of your puppy. Keep your dishwasher closed. Know all the common food that are toxic to dogs ie. chocolate, grapes, raisins, etc.

That’s about it! If you’re about to bring home a new puppy I suggest you go through these 7 steps to puppy proofing your house.

What about you guys? Am I missing anything? Do you have a checklist you go through for puppy proofing your house? Please tell me about it in the comment section below.

We put together a blog post (check it out because their were 10 excellent finalists) announcing that we were a finalist for the PetSmart Blog to Biz Contest.

Next we put together a video to try and bring together our vision of building a biz blog to life.

And today we heard that PuppyInTraining.com was a grand prize winner!

Did we mention there were 2 winners? The other Blog to Biz winner was Snoopy’s Blog. If you haven’t already you should check out Snoopy’s excellent blog. He and his mum, Annette already have a vibrant community there and we’re sure they will do a great job working with PetSmart towards building a business blog.

Blog Paws 2012 Here We Come!

I’m around dogs almost 24 hours a day 7 days a week. As a guide dog puppy raiser you take you dog with you just about everywhere you go. When I’m out and about I usually get many of the same questions like:

Is it hard to give your puppy up when it’s time for guide dog college?

How long do you keep your puppy?

At what age do you bring home your puppy?

etc. etc. etc.

However, one question that I used to get regularly came up for the first time in months maybe a year? That questions was “What are the best family dogs?“ This was even one of my first questions before I picked up Linus over 7 years ago. I even built a spreadsheet that I shared here over 4 years ago with a 2 part blog series on what I thought were the best family dogs.

The Best Family Dogs

My original article was more about online research and trying to stoke discussion about everyone’s experiences with different dog breeds. Thanks to the comment section this post went well beyond my own research and experience as many people shared their favorite dog breeds and also many people expressed their displeasure with certain dog breeds including some that I had on my list.

Reggie The Golden Retriever

Yesterday I spoke candidly with a young lady who was contemplating what dog breed would be best as a family dog. Here are some of the things I said to her:

The breed of dog you get largely depends on you and your family. What do you prefer in a dog? What is your families lifestyle? Do you like to run with your dog? Do you like a couch potato? Are you the outdoorsy type?

Shelter Dogs Part I – Linus was a shelter dog. However, I don’t think that shelter dogs are for everyone. Linus was sick when I picked him up and it took a lot of work to get him healthy again. I’m not sure everyone wants to nurse a sick do back to health when adopting a puppy.

Shelter Dogs Part II – You usually don’t know as much about shelter dogs because you probably won’t get to meet their parents. Also, there could be some behavior problems that you need to deal with. A friend of mine rescued a shepherd mix who was a wonderful dog. However, the minute they left him alone he had severe separation anxiety and even jumped a 6 foot fence to try and escape.

Shelter Dogs Part III – I’ve read that as much as 25% of the dogs in shelters are pure bred.

Rescue Dogs – I’m a big advocate of going to a dog rescue like Cuddly Canines to rescue your next dog. I like rescues a little bit more than going to your local animal shelter for a few reasons:

The dogs are usually evaluated in a foster home for a minimum of 2 weeks. This gives fosters a chance to see what the dogs personality is like before adopting him out.

Most of the vaccinations are already done by the rescue group.

Dogs have already started worming medications and are usually fully dewormed by the time they go home. You probably don’t want to deal with dog worms they’re gross!

Dogs are already spayed or neutered. This is nice because you don’t have to worry about another surgery. You don’t have to worry about your dog wearing the cone of shame. It’s a lot cheaper to register a fixed dog.

If you decide that you want to go to a breeder make sure you find a reputable breeder.

Finally to the moment of truth. Of course you know my answer is going to be biased seeing that I’m a guide dog puppy raiser and have had Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers living in my house for the past 5 years. So here we go…my short and easy answer:

My Nomination for the Best Family Dog

Labrador Retriever!

How can all of those folks at the AKC be wrong? The Labrador Retriever has been the number 1 registered dog through the AKC for over 10 years!

I’ve puppy raised and puppy sat many Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. I prefer Labs over Goldens and the main reason is because of their coat. The Golden requires a little more maintenance then a Lab. I do love the personalities of both the Goldens and Labs I’ve had.

So there you have it. The Labrador Retriever once again is number 1. Sorry Linus (Australian Shepherd Mix)…Sorry Apache(Golden Retriever)….Hurray for Stetson (Black Labrador Retreiver)!!!

Tell us what dog breed do you think makes the best family dog? Let us know…leave us a comment.

I love puppies! There cute, adorable, cuddly, and of course who can’t resist the famous puppy breath! These things are all great, but once you get your new puppy home he will test your patience…seriously!

I like to preach that people need to be consistent, persistent and patient when it comes to training. Today I have a few extra puppy training tips and hints that might help you when it comes time to train your puppy.

3 Puppy Training Tips

Here are a few hints that will help yo get started from my GDA puppy training manual:

As you start your puppy’s first lessons, remember the importance of being consistent, calm, and patient. When your patience slips, call of the lesson for a while.

A good trainer knows when to be firm or gentle, when to scold or praise.

Dog training is built on reward and correction.

Give commands firmly, but not angrily. Anger will not make the dog learn any faster, and, in fact, will make him dislike his lessons.

Give praise from the heart, keeping your voice calm and easy while stroking the puppy’s head lightly. Your verbal and physical praise will not only be positive reinforcement, but will keep the dog’s attention on you, and calm manner will keep the pup from getting excited and thinking it’s playtime.

My puppy, Dublin catching some sun rays.

When giving commands or praise to your pup, look directly at him, not straight ahead or off in another direction. Eye contact and a well directed voice are very effective elements of communication and control. 3 important points to remember while training your dog are:

Give a command only once. I actually talked about this in my Puppy Training Tips of the Day.

Don’t give a command you are unable to enforce. If you have something in your hands, or if you’re some distance away, there’s no way you can enforce what you are asking, so the puppy learns that a command is sometimes just empty talk.

Take one command at a time. Learning will come along much quicker this way, rather than trying to teach all of the commands in a day. Continue teaching one command, and review the one learned.

These 3 tips are great and something everyone should read through and brush up on as I’m sure we’ve all broken at least one of these rules with our dog within the last few days.

A few other things I’ve noticed since I started raising puppies:

It definitely is very easy to lose your patients when trying to train a puppy. Just take a step back and give yourself and your puppy a little break if you feel yourself losing your patience.

Praise works great with puppies. Try to be as exciting as possible with your praise and your puppy will love it. I’ve always heard that women make better puppy trainers because they have higher voices and can sound more exciting then their male counterparts…guys, is that true?

Be consistent. Be Persistent. Be Patient. – when it comes to puppy training.

That’s it! 3 puppy training tips from the GDA handbook and 3 training tips from me. Now why don’t you lay down your 3 favorite puppy training tips. Drop us a line in the comment section below.

There’s always a ton of excitement the day you bring home a puppy and it’s no different if your a puppy raisers. However, one advantage we (as puppy raisers) have over a regular new puppy owner is Guide Dogs of America sends us home with a GDA Puppy Starter Kit.

The GDA Puppy Starter Kit doesn’t have everything you need to raise a puppy, but it does have some of the essentials that are important for all puppy raisers.

If you didn’t see our first Puppy In Training TV video then you probably missed out on the short video that highlighted some of the items from our puppy kit. Take a look at around the 1 minute and 58 second mark of the video:

Puppy Starter Kit

A true puppy starter kit would have everything you need for your new puppy. However, this is our GDA Puppy Starter Kit which is more of a “Puppy Go Home Kit”. Anyhow here’s the list of the 12 items that we receive the day we bring home our new puppies!

Our GDA Puppy Starter Kit

1 Stainless Steel Bowl

1 Sterilized Hollow Bone

2 Collars – 1 puppy size, and a larger one

1 Nylon Leash

Zoom Groom Brush or Rake Brush (depending on breed) for grooming

A Small Blanket

A Small Stuffed Toy

A Puppy Bib

Heartworm medication for the entire time you have the puppy

5 lb bag of the current puppy food we want you to feed your pup, to get you started

1 GDA pet identification tag

1 microchip identification tag

Of course GDA sends you home with one other very important item…A cute, adorable, cuddly new puppy! One that hopefully sleeps through the night and doesn’t have any accidents in the home.

If you’re a new puppy owner (not a puppy raiser) then some of those items are definitely not necessary including:

The Puppy Bib – which allows our pups to go out to public places

GDA pet identification tag – you should get your own personal tag just in case your puppy gets lost.

If you’re bringing home a GDA puppy then you can expect to receive a nice littler puppy go home kit to get you started. However, if you’re getting a new puppy on your own that this list is just the start. I’d definitely recommend several other items including a basic book on how to train a puppy like Puppies for Dummies (affiliate link).

In the near future I’ll see what I can do about putting together a comprehensive list that would include all the items I think you should have in your puppy starter kit.

So that’s it! What would you include in your puppy starter kit? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

Brushing your dog…it sounds so simple and in all honesty it’s not a complex task at all. However, there are some basics you should know if you want to learn the proper ways on How to brush a dog, when to brush a dog, and also a little bit about dog brushes.

I never thought too much about brushing my dog as a kid and also when I picked up my first puppy, Linus from the animal shelter. It was merely an afterthought and I just grabbed a two sided brush off the shelf and threw it in my basket.

However, after I took puppy kindergarten I began to learn a little bit about dog grooming, brushing different fur coats, and brush dog’s teeeth.

A couple years after those initial puppy kindergarten’s with Linus I started volunteering as a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs of America and brought home my official puppy raiser manual which detailed some of the basics on brushing your dog.

How To Brush A Dog, When to Brush A Dog…

Yep! We had to brush Dublin after his day at the pool.

Here are some of the basics on how to brush your dogfrom my GDA handbook:

Daily brushing is not just for long-haired dogs to prevent mating. All dogs should have their hair brushed to remove dirt and to stimulate necessary oil production. First, brush against the direction of growth to remove dirt, flakes and dead fur, then again with the lay of the coat. By removing loose particles you reduce the dogs need to scratch; too much scratching can cause skin lesions. Stimulating the oil glands, to prevent dry skin, is especially important for Labradors and for any breed in cold weather. Of course there’s the sheer beauty of a well-groomed dog! Be careful using a slicker brush. You need only to apply as much pressure as you use on your own hair.

A few points that I’ve picked up along the way to go along with the above paragraph:

Be gentle when brushing against the direction of growth as you are more likely to catch a tangle.

You should brush your dog daily which also gives you a chance to see possible skin problems like sores, rashes, cuts, lumps, bumps, and possible parasites (fleas and ticks).

It’s good bonding time and your puppy will learn to enjoy his brushing sessions.

Be careful around sensitive areas like groin, arm pits, stomach, etc.

Have this be a positive experience for your puppy and make sure you reinforce his good behavior with praise.

If your just starting your brushing routine with a new puppy then keep the sessions short (1-2 minutes). Also, exercise him so he’s tired before you start your brushing session.

Those are some of the things I learned along the way on when and how to brush a dog since getting my first puppy over 7 years ago. Here are a few pointers I’ve learned about dog brushes:

Dog Brushes

As guide dog puppy raiser I’ve had 2 different breeds of dog. When I first brought home my guide dog puppy he was 7 weeks old and GDA also sent me home with a nice little puppy go home kit. My first puppy was Stetson, a black Labrador Retriever and inside his puppy kit I received a brand new Rubber Curry Brush For Dogs (affiliate link). Nowadays GDA sends Labradors home with KONG Zoom Groom DOG Brush (affiliate link). They are both nice rubber brushes, but much different then the standard brush I got for Linus many years ago. Both of these dog brushes are great for dogs with a short coat. Here’s the description of the Zoom Groom from Amazon.com:

Zoom Groom is a natural rubber dog brush that helps promote healthy skin and coat. Flexible rubber fingers gently collect loose hair like a magnet on wet or dry coats. This unique rubber brush provides a massage for pets while conditioning the skin. Works great as a shampooer, improving the effectiveness of regular and medicated shampoos.

Apache is the first Golden Retriever I’ve raised and because Golden’s have a long coat GDA sends you home with a different kind of brush. The brush I use with Apache is very similar to this one: Shedding Slicker Brush (affiliate link). This brush works much better with Apache’s long coat.

One final dog brush I use with my dogs is the FURminator (affiliate link). This is a great brush for removing your dogs undercoat. However, be careful if you use the FURminator as it could does have some sharp edges inside the brush and you can also end up removing more fur then you’d like. I use the FURminator sparingly.

That’s about it. My main point in this post is make sure you brush your dog daily not only because you’ll find less fur flying around the house, but it’s also beneficial to your dog’s health.

How often do you brush your dog’s coat? What kind of dog brush do you use? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

The good people at pet365 actually sent me this post on “Dog Training Statistics” many moons ago and unfortunately it’s taken me this long to get a blog article together about their wonderful infographic. One thing I definitely have to agree with is the first line: “A well trained dog is by far a happier dog!”

There are many reasons why I believe this is a true statement. Here are just a few of my personal reasons:

If your dog is well trained then you’re probably spending more time with your dog then the average non-trained dog.

Your dog knows the rules and boundaries because as a well-trained dog you’ve taught him these things.

Dog training is a great time for handlers and dogs to bound.

You as a dog handler understand your dog better.

Well trained dogs have been socialized with not only other dogs, but with different kinds of people places and things.

If you want to go places with your dog you feel much more comfortable if they are well trained. Thus your dog gets to go to more different places.

Those are just a few off the top of my head, but enough about my thoughts on dog training lets get to the infographic!

Dog Training Statistics

Dog Training graphic created by Matt Beswick for Pet365 – a UK supplier of dog beds, collars and coats. Click here to view the full post.

Dog Training Statistics – Transcription

Infographics are very visual, but some of my readers cannot always see the images on my blog so here’s a little transcription of the Dog Training Statistics Infographic:

A well trained dog is by far happier dog! Why? Because a trained dog requires fewer restrictions. The more reliable the dog, the more freedom he is given. Also, he receives more attention and interaction with family members, visitors, and passer-by then does the ill mannered dog.

“How Well Trained Are They?” My Dog vs Other Dog (Marks out of 10 with 10 being the best)

4 or 5 – My Dog – 16.1%; Other Dog – 46.2%

7 or 8 – My Dog – 51.9%; Other Dog – 23.1%

“Most dog owners think their dogs are better trained than those belonging to other people.”

“Sit” is the most well-known command with 9 out of 10 dogs knowing how to put their bums on the floor when told…

99.5% of owners think that rewarding good behaviour is most effective when training.

94% of people do at least some training with their dog at home. Impressive!

Owners with 3 or more dogs were more likely to socialise their dog when it was a puppy. Proof that we do learn from our mistakes (eventually)!

Percentage of dogs socialised as puppies

Own’s 3+ Dogs – 50.6%

3 dogs or less – 26.5%

“How easy was your dog to train?”

Went to puppy socialisation – 9.6%

Didn’t go – 4.5%

Owners that went to socialisation classes found their dogs much easier to train. Only 4.5% of owners that had been gave their dogs less than 3 out of 10 as opposed to 9.6% that hadn’t.

What is the most important command for a dog to know?

Stay – 26.9%

Recall – 54.8%

Sit – 12.9%

Roll over! – 0.2%

Have you ever been to a dog training class?

Nope, Never – 53.1%

I still go* – 14.4%

I used to go, but don’t anymore – 32.5%

*This group is what dogs would call “favourite owners”. Woof!

What commands does your dog know?

Fetch – 50.4%

Stay – 83.8%

Recall – 82.1%

Sit – 90.2%

Rollover – 24%

So that’s the dog training infographic! Some pretty cool statistics there, but to me these stats seem a little bit inflated/biased and that’s mainly because the surveys were probably filled out by dog enthusiasts rather than your average dog owner.

I like that the infographic stresses puppy socialization which is an important part of what we do as puppy raisers when when training our guide dog puppies.

For more information about the research of these dog training statistics visit the pet365 website.

Every once in a while I go on vacation without the dogs and I often wonder: “Could I have taken my dogs with me? Does this city have pet friendly hotels?” I recently visited sin city, that’s right Las Vegas! I never even considered bringing the dogs considering I was going to be playing in a hockey tournament, hanging out with friends, and doing a little gambling. Where would there be room for the dogs?

Saturday night we were walking over to Toby Keith’s “I love this bar” to have a few libations and listen to some country music. On the way into the Harrahs Hotel I came across this sign:

Dog Relief Area Sign From A Pet Friendly Hotel

I was quite surprised and interested at the same time. I knew there were probably some pet friendly hotels in Las Vegas maybe somewhere along the outskirts of town, but this was at Harrahs right in the middle of the strip! I made sure to take a picture as I knew my memory would fail me and I’m glad I did. The next day I got on the internet and looked up PetStay in Las Vegas and was surprised to find that Harrahs was not the only hotel on the stip that allowed dogs to stay at the hotel.

Pet Friendly Hotels In Las Vegas…Well Actually Dog Friendly Hotels…

As I mentioned I searched and found information on the PetStay resorts which is program through Caesars Entertainmen. Here’s the information from their website:

We allow Service Animals in all our locations. I hope they also allow Service Animal Puppies In Training like Apache at all locations.

Caesars PetStay program is available at many of our locations. Participating PetStay resorts each have the following pet policy:

Dogs are the only animals allowed under the PetStay program.

Dogs staying at any of the participating hotels must weigh 50 pounds or less and be present at the time of check- in.

Up to 2 dogs per room are allowed

Dogs are permitted to walk through designated common areas while on a leash and accompanied by the owner.

Check in time for PetStay rooms is 4pm. Dog owners must be prepared to accommodate your dogs until your room is ready.

Dogs must be kenneled or out of the room during housekeeping. (Housekeeping may be scheduled at your convenience, but housekeeping must be allowed to service your guest room at a minimum of every other day.)

For additional information on PetStay, please click here.

PetStay Resorts include:

Caesars Palace

Planet Hollywood

Paris Las Vegas

Harrah’s Las Vegas

Flamingo Las Vegas

Bally’s Las Vegas

Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino

Imperial Palace

Showboat Atlantic City

Harrah’s Laughlin

Horseshoe Bossier City

Harrah’s Reno

Harveys Lake Tahoe

Harrah’s St. Louis

Harrah’s North Kansas City

Grand Biloxi

Harrah’s Cherokee

Harrah’s Council Bluffs

If the resort you are interested in does not participate in the PetStay program, we have provided additional information for boarding your pet during your stay. If the property you are visiting is not listed below, please call the hotel direct for local information.

As far as to my knowledge the first 8 hotels listed above are in Pet Friendly Hotels in Las Vegas and 7 out of the 8 are on the strip. That’s pretty darn cool!

One thing I did note is that the PetStay program is for dogs only so sorry to all of you other pet owners out there. Maybe the program should have been labled DogStay since they are all dog friendly hotels and not the all inclusive pet friendly hotels.

Lucky for me I’m all about the dogs, but one other problem is my 3 dogs are 59 lbs, 70 lbs, and 82 lbs!? I wonder if I could get a waiver on the weight limit? Oh well, I’m just glad to see that Caesar’s Entertainment is catering to us dog lovers.

How about you? Did you know about these pet friendly hotels (dog friendly hotels)? If so, have you stayed at any of them? I’d love to hear about your experiences in he comment section below.
