WARNING! Some technical mumbo jumbo and a little bit of venting coming ahead…

At the beginning of the year I set a goal to create 366 blog posts from February 1st 2012 to January 31st 2013. Basically one post a day. In case you missed it check out my 2012 goal post. I was doing quite well missing a couple posts due to unforeseen traveling and internet problems, but besides that everything was going well and everything was right in the world (the world of PuppyInTraining.com that is).

Unfortunately, the happy days never seem to last that long. Of course someone had to throw a wrench into my happy blogging days (not to mention a screw driver, a hammer, and any other relevant tool). I recently came across an email message through my Google Webmaster tools informing me that there was unnatural linking on PuppyInTraining.com. So what the heck does that mean? I’m just about as dumbfounded as you! Here’ the email message exactly as I received it:

Unnatural Links – Google Webmaster Tools

Subject Line: Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links on http://puppyintraining.com/

Dear site owner or webmaster of http://puppyintraining.com/,

We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include selling links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results.

If you have any questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.

Sincerely,

Google Search Quality Team

Since Google represents about 75% of the traffic to this site when they tell me to jump I say “how high?” Unfortunately for me I’m not really sure what to make of this whole debacle and because I don’t participate in linking schemes of any sort I’m not sure what’s going on.

I'm glad Linus likes to work on these technical issues.

So I sat down at my desk and thought about what could be triggering this email from Google Webmaster Tools. Here were my thoughts:

I’ve been monitoring my traffic for the past couple weeks. My traffic has dropped about 10%.

I notice my pages no longer have a Page Rank. I used to have hundreds of indexed pages with PR ranging from PR1 – PR5.

I haven’t really done any link building in the past 2-3 years besides trying to create great content. However, I did submit my site to directorys way back in the day and some of those backlinks may appear spammy. I’m not really sure how to undo that one.

I went into Google Webmaster Tools and I’ve been attempting to cleanup all of their suggestions.

I have 2 other pet blogs that link back to PuppyInTraining.com, but I really haven’t been managing either blog for about 2 years. So I did the following updates to both blogs because I think Google may think that they are spammy blogs.

Update to the latest version of WordPress

Update all plugins

Turned off commenting and trackbacks

Deleted all of the spammy looking comments

1 of the 2 blogs had a “do follow” comment plugin. I deactivated this plugin

I used to run a blog carnival. Some of these links could be spammy as well so I started removing all the links in my blog carnivals.

I had 2 affiliate links in my footer that I changed to “NoFollow”

I removed Chitika ads from the sidebar and below posts

This is what I’ve done so far and I’ve been taking about an hour or 2 a day to work on this cleanup and basically that’s killing my ability to produce new content.

By the way, I’ve also been reading through many forums trying to find answers and no one really knows for sure what’s going on. A lot of people sound like they’re in the same boat as me and have not ever participated in a link network nor do they really know what unnatural links Google is talking about. It appears that 700,000 of these emails went out in January and February 2012. I received my email late March 2012. I’m thinking by now Google has probably sent well over a million of these emails.

Another thing to ponder is could this be a result of negative SEO? Basically if these unnatural links are harming my site (and others) then why couldn’t someone just send your site a bunch of spammy links to give you an unnatural link profile and fall out of favor with Google. Think about it…this could be disastrous!

So, unfortunately I’m going to be changing up my posting schedule so I can work to get this “unnatural linking” business with Google straightened out. From now on I’m going to post between 3-5 articles a week and use my other spare time to try and clean things up to make Google happy.

Here’s my cry for HELP!!! Have any of you experienced any of this fun and excitement? If so, what are you doing to fix these problems. I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comment section below.

I’ve been working on the Puppy In Training Blog for nearly 5 years now writing about my experiences and puppy training tips as a guide dog puppy raiser. You may have noticed over the years that from time to time I make changes to the design by adding Google AdSense, Sponsored Ads in the sidebar, and affiliate links to Amazon.com. This brings in a little bit of income to help cover the costs of hosting my blog and also allows me to make more donations to my favorite guide dog groups, animal rescues, and charities.

This bit of money helps, but it’s not enough for me to consider the Puppy In Training Blog a business.

The good news is help may be on the way. I’ve been itching to go to this years BlogPaws Conference and recently while checking my RSS feed I came across Build a Business Blog Contest sponsored by PetSmart and BlogPaws.

Needless to say, I was excited that I might have the opportunity to work with a PetSmart Social Media Expert to try and move my blog to the next level. Conference calls, coaching, and homework assignments sounded exactly like what I need to turn my blog into a business.

I decided to submit the Puppy In Training Blog into the competition and one week later I found out that this blog was one of the top 10 finalists!

Top 10 Finalists For Build A Business Blog Contest

Here it is! In no particular order the top 10 finalists for the build a business blog contest sponsored by PetSmart and BlogPaws:

Paws-and-effect - http://www.paws-and-effect.com

I Love Rescue Animals - http://iloverescueanimals.org

Travelin’ Jack’s Dog Blog - http://www.travlinjack.com

AdoptedMomtoChazz - http://www.adoptedmomtochazzthedog.wordpress.com

Tripawds - http://tripawds.com

GLO GIRLY - http://www.glogirly.com/

Pet Peeves - http://www.Pet-Peeves.org

Congratulations to the 10 finalists! I’m honored to be in the company of these great blogs!

Thank you so much to the judges, BlogPaws, and PetSmart! I really appreciate the opportunity you are giving us to improve our blogs.

So you’re a finalist…now what? These 10 finalists are now required to submit a 2 minute video telling the judges exactly why they should win this fun, fantastic opportunity to take their blog to the next level.

And what happens should we win?

Two lucky winners will receive a free pass to attend BlogPaws 2012 and will work with PetSmart to enhance their blog leading into BlogPaws 2012. You can expect conference calls, homework assignments, coaching and more – AND you can help present your key learnings with PetSmart during a blogger panel on this topic.

I think I’m equally as excited that I might have the opportunity to present my key learnings with PetSmart during a blogger panel on this topic!

Now all I have to do is put together a super awesome 2 minute video to try and win over the judges. I’m hoping some of my readers could help me out here. Does anyone out there have any great ideas I could use in my video? Let me know in the comment section below.

I know we’re supposed to be talking about puppy training, but every once in a while I like to talk about what’s going on behind the scenes at the your favorite pet blog: PuppyInTraining.com

If you remember way back at the beginning of February I decided to make 366 posts to my pet blog as a <del>challenge</del> goal for 2012. The goal was about consistency. I wanted to produce content daily for my PuppyInTraining.com dog blog. Unfortunately, my string of consecutive posts ended last Friday night when the internet connection at my hotel went down while I was on vacation

The streak ends at 44 posts, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still reach my goal of 366 blog posts. Even though I was on vacation I was still creating blog entries, but instead of posting to WordPress I saved the posts in a Word Document locally on my computer. So, fortunately I have 2 extra blog posts that I will post this week thus giving me the opportunity to reach my 366 posts.

After this past weekends debacle I wanted to reach out to other pet bloggers to find out what they do with their pet blogs when they travel. In the future these are 5 ways I plan on using to keep my pet blog up to date while on vacation.

5 Ways To Keep Up Your Pet Blog While You Travel

Dublin the Pet Blogger!

This is the first time I made a concerted effort to keep posting to my dog blog while on vacation and unfortunately things didn’t go quite as planned. I had time sectioned off during my trip specifically allocated as personal pet blogger time. I was able to stick to this schedule, but internet connectivity did not agree with me and I didn’t have time, vehicle, or motivation to search out other possible internet connections.

So what could I have done differently to keep my string of consecutive blog posts alive?

Scheduled Blog Posts – I was only gone four days so I could have created a few blog posts beforehand and scheduled them using WordPress to be released on specific times and dates. This was actually the original plan, but I was so busy the week leading up to my vacation I didn’t have time to pre-write my blog posts.

Blog While On Vacation – My plan was to just allocate some personal pet blogger time while I was off on holiday. Before traveling I made sure I could get an internet connection at my hotel. I then made sure to bring my laptop with a few blog post ideas relating to my trip. Finally, I started pet blogging late Thursday night starting with a post about dog boarding. Things went wrong on day 2…no internet for the next couple days…thus ending my consecutive streak of blog posts

Guest Pet Bloggers – Bring in guest pet bloggers to write for a few consecutive days. Unfortunately, I don’t have the relationships at this point to pull in pet bloggers I know and trust to create riveting pet blog posts. This is something I’m going to work towards this year.

Use Your IPhone 4S – Create blog posts using your smartphone. I have the original Droid and it’s gotten to the point where the battery really only lasts about a half day. I actually thought about using my Droid to create blog posts for my Puppy In Training blog while on vacation, but alas it seemed way to difficult especially with my outdated equipment. Now if I had a newer smartphone like the IPhone 4S or maybe some other high end Android smartphone I may have ventured into the world of pet blogging from your phone…definitely a possibility unless I go to option 5…

I’m not fat…I’m just a little husky! It sounds like something I say every year after the holidays, right before I renew my gym membership and start working on my six pack…urummm….I mean my mini keg.

However, this time I was helping one of my friends train his puppy. During one of the training sessions I decided to bring along my Golden Retriever, Apache to not only act as a distraction, but to give him a chance to work on staying in a down position calmly with a puppy in the room.

So what happened? Well, puppy training went well and when they first met we happened to capture a great shot of Alchemy (Siberian Husky puppy) yapping while Apache (my Golden Retriever) has a goofy look on his face.

So I posted the picture in a few places…Facebook, Twitter, etc. and asked people to write the caption. After many responses we have a winner!

Classic Pic! A Must See! A great picture of a little Siberian Husky puppy yapping at a full grown Golden Retriever with a goofy look on his face! The caption is spot on. “I’m not fat…I’m just a little husky.” Love it!

Every once in a while I come across some funny dog pictures and I like to post them here on the blog, on Facebook, and on Twitter.

A few years back I wrote two articles, the first was about the life expectancy of dogs and the second was about the life expectancy of pets. If you look back at those at the second post about the life expectancy of pets then you’ll see that the average life expectancy of a dog is 12.8 years. Also, now that I look back I put those articles together over 4 years ago! I was training Stetson to be a guide dog at that time!

Now you may be wondering why all the concern with “how long dogs live” and “average life expectancies of dogs“? First of all, Linus recently turned 7 years old and Stetson turned 5. If you go by the old dog to human year calculator of 7 dog years for every 1 human year then Linus is 49 and Stetson is 35! That’s right they’re no longer spring chickens. Second, one of my friends 6 year old Labrador Retriever has not been feeling well and has low platelets and low red blood cells and has been put on serious steroids. I thought way to young to start seeing these kind of problems, but then again I guess you never know.

Dog Years

I decided to dig a little deeper then the original articles on life expectancy of dogs and found a site on some updated information about dog years versus human years. I really like the simplicity of this website. Just a single page, no links, and a catchy domain name. Check out this website on dog years if you have a moment. Here’s a quote from the site:

Generally, a dog of six has aged about as much as a 45-year-old human. At 10, she’s like a human of 65; at 12, a human of 75; and at 15, a human of 90.

So the good news for my boys is they’re “supposedly” not aging as fast now that they are 5 and 7 years old. According to the chart on the DogYears.com website its approximately 5 years for every 1 human year once your pup hits about 2 years of age.

How Long Dog Dogs Live?

Dublin as a puppy. Hopefully he'll become a guide dog before his 2nd birthday.

I already answered the question and if you were paying attention the answer was the average life expectancy of a dog is 12.8 years. However, many of you already know that this varies by breed. In general small dog breeds live longer than large dog breeds and some breeds are much heartier then others.

So if you want to know how long do dogs live based on breed then check out this article on What’s The Life Expectancy Of A Dog? I listed over 60 dog breeds average life expectancy.

What breeds am I most concerned with? One of my biggest questions would be “How Long Dog Labs Live?” Mainly because the majority of the guide dogs I’ve trained are Labrador Retrievers (Stetson, Derby, Dublin, plus all my fellow puppy raiser’s pups). And of course family and friends dog breeds come to mind. Here’s a list of dog breeds that are near and dear to my heart:

Australian Shepherd (12-15 years) – Linus is a 7 year old Austrlian Shepherd mix

Labrador Retriever (12.6 years) – Stetson is a 5 year old black Labrador Retriever

Golden Retriever (12.0 years) – Apache is a 1 year old Golden Retriever

Cairn Terrier (13.2) – Ralphie is my parents 7 year old Cairn Terrier Mix

German Shepherd (10.3) – Georgie is my brothers 5 year old German Shepherd mix

Yorkshire Terrier (12.8) – Yuki is my gf’s parents 1 year old Yorkie

For the expanded list check out our old post on life expectancy of dogs.

In case you were wondering according to the list the dog breed with the longest life expectancy is the miniature Dachshund at 14.4 years and the breed with the shortest life expectancy is the Irish Wolfhound at 6.2 years. I don’t think I could stand to have my dog live on 6.2 years.

I know these are just averages, but it does give you a ball park figure for your dog. I’ve had to family dogs growing up a Golden Retriever that lived to 10 years of age and a mixed breed that was part border collie I believe that lived with us for about 18 years (he was supposedly 2 years old when we picked him up from the shelter).

I’m hoping that my boys live well beyond their average life expectancy and I’m hoping all those years are healthy and happy for them.

Now that I’ve answered the question how long do dogs live it’s your turn. I’d love to hear about your experience with the average life expectancy of dogs. Tell us about your dogs in the comment section below.

Okay so it’s not quite spring time yet. In fact I don’t even think winter has started out here in southern California. It was 80 degrees outside today!

Anyhow I decided it was a good time to do a little spring cleaning with my Puppy In Training Newsletter list. If you recall My 2012 Goal post then you might remember that one of my goals is to write 52 articles for my autoresponder by March 31st 2012. Well to start things off I decided it would first be a good idea to clean up my list by removing people who are not opening or responding to my recent emails.

Dublin working on my email list

My Email List

I’ve mentioned this before, but I have (had) over 3,000 subscribers on my email list. However, this number doesn’t do much good if those subscribers don’t read or take action on my emails. I was surprised to find that a number of people are not even opening my emails. I ran a filter on people not opening emails and I went ahead and deleted over 1,000 subscribers bringing my list total to just over 2,000 subscribers. I’m glad I took the time to do a little bit of cleanup because it now saves me $20 a month.

Did I Accidentally Delete You?

The only problem with deleting over 1,000 people from my email list is I may have accidentally deleted people who actually want to receive my emails, but haven’t for one reason or another opened or responded to any of my recent emails. If that’s you then I apologize and please re-subscribe to our email list by filling out the form below.

How will you know if I accidentally deleted you? Well, today is February 8th, 2012 and tomorrow February 9th, 2012 around 8am PST I will be sending an email that has links to a couple of this weeks posts:

If you do not receive that email on February 9th, 2012 then your spam filter has blocked us or I accidentally deleted you from the Puppy In Training email list (please re-subscribe using the form above). If you are reading this and subscribed to the newsletter past February 9th, 2012 then you have nothing to worry about.

It’s a month late, but better late than never! Actually this past month gave me a chance to take in and see some of the things my fellow pet bloggers plan on accomplishing in the coming year. PuppyInTraining.com participated in the 2nd annual Pet Blogger Challenge (PBC) on January 10th and so did 94 other pet bloggers. At a snails pace I read each and every PBC post which gave me inspiration for my 2012 goal post!

My 2012 Goal Is To Be Big Like You!

This is the first year I decided to share my goals for this blog publicly.

Why?

I’m sharing my goals with you today because it’s a way to keep me accountable for meeting those goals. Many of you probably aren’t interested in my goals, but the fact that I’m posting them here on the Puppy In Training blog gives me motivation to complete those goals and also put together a nice report for the beginning of next year.

So lets get started with Puppy In Training 2012 Goals!

GOAL: 366 Days of Blogging

For some this is easy for others (like me) this is a beast. The closest I’ve gotten was way back in 2008, my first full year of blogging. I hit 196 blog posts that year and it was by far my biggest growth year. I only blogged for 5 months in 2007 and received a paltry 1,528 page views (probably all from me and my mom). In 2008 that number jumped to 294,607 page views. I’m not even going to calculate the percent increase, but it’s big.

Since then the growth of this blog has ranged from 30-60%. Okay, but not great. This year I’m going to strive for greater things. Reach for the stars! And 366 Days of Blogging is going to get me there!

By the way this year 366 days = 1 year so we’re going above and beyond your average joe and doing 1 more day then everyone else does in a regular year!!!

GOAL: Write 52 Articles For My Autoresponder by March 31st 2012

I’ve been saying this for a while, but now I have a measurable deadline. I’m really just letting my email subscriber list go to waste by not creating a sequence of emails for my autoresponder. I’ve got over 3,000 subscribers! That’s a potential 3,000 extra people viewing my content on a weekly basis. Time to start working on getting you guys valuable content through my autoresponder.

By the way, another reason why I should be working on this is because each subscriber is costing me precious $’s. If I’m not going to use the list then I may as well stop paying Aweber.

GOAL: Attend BlogPaws and Barkworld Expo

The 2 major pet blogging conferences that I know of in 2012. I’d like to know more about my fellow pet bloggers as well as work on my pet blogging skills. These conferences will help me with both. However, one is in Salt Lake City, UT and the other is in Atlanta, GA while I’m in Irvine, CA. It will cost me a pretty penny to get out to these locations. However, I think this is the year I get it done. Plus I have old friends to visit in both cities

GOAL: Write An eBook by June 30th 2012

It’s been on my plate for years, but this is the year I write a companion eBook for this website. The goal is to put together a How To Train Your Puppy eBook by mid year and I’m going to make it happen. After all I can’t let that extra day go to waste (because of the leap year).

I’m pretty sure this is going to be a freebie, but I’m not entirely sure. There’s always something to be said for charging a little bit of money. When you pay for something you are more likely to read or use it.

GOAL: Build A Membership Site by January 31st 2013

This is the monster goal for the year. I have tons of ideas hopping around in my head, but until I actually accomplish some of the other long awaited projects (see above) I’m not going to touch this goal. If I can stick to the timeline then I definitely believe I will accomplish this one as well.

Another one of those things that might require fees. Again I’m not too sure on membership fees. I’ll look into it more after I start creating a timeline for the project.

GOAL: 2,000 Facebook “likes” by January 31st 2013

It seems realistic and unrealistic. Realistic because it’s really not that large a number. I’ve seen sites grow their facebook “likes” to 2,000 in hours/days/weeks. All I need is that one viral moment and I should easily breach the 2,000 “Likes” on the Puppy In Training Facebook Fan Page.

However, on the other side of the coin it’s unrealistic because if you ever watched the number of “likes” on the Puppy In Training Fan Page then you will know that it only increments about 1 new “like” per day. That means in 1 years time we’ll be lucky if we clear 1,000 “likes”.

I’m just looking for that 1 moment of brilliance. That 1 extra effort. That 1 time that will put us over the top. 2K is within reach, but we have to work for it!

*I think Google+ is going to be a big thing this year and I will probably set some kind of goal for the Puppy In Training Google+ page as well. As of this writing the page is dormant, but not for long.

GOAL: 250K Page Views a Month by January 31st, 2013

Since I’m starting in February my goal time line will be exactly one year. This is a monstrous goal with my top month in 2011 equaling 104,351 page views. That means I would need a 140% increase from last years total. However, lets take a look back and compare October 2010 and 2011.

October 2010 - 53,328 page views
October 2011 - 104,351 page views

That’s a 96% increase! That’s with no goals or direction in 2011. I think we can do better in 2012! A 250K page view month is going to happen in 2012! BOOK IT!

Things will inevitably change in 2012 and I may have to make a few adjustments to these goals, but here they are as they stand the first day in February 2012. My goal of goals is to hit a homerun on all of these and with a little bit of luck…I will.

What are your goals for 2012? Most of you probably already talked about your goals publicly and if so please leave me a link in the comment section below so I can check them out. If not, please feel free to leave a few of your goals in the comment section below…of course we’re going to hold you accountable once they’re posted to the blog

YAY! It’s Friday! Time for fun and laughter…maybe happy hour after work? Anyhow, I recently came across another Puppy Vs Kitty video in my Google Reader news feed. This one is the Ninja Cat vs French Bulldog puppy. One of my friends just recently brought home a French Bulldog puppy and he is absolutely adorable (I don’t know if they have a kitty to play with him). Whenever I see these cat and dog videos it always makes me think back to Tom and Jerry (and of course Spike the dog). Anyhow, take a look at this adorable video of a puppy and kitty playing together.

By the way, my favorite part comes right around the 41 second mark in the video. The move the kitty pulls is definitely very Ninja-Like!

Every time I see a video like this it makes me want to run to the animal shelter and rescue a kitty to play with my dogs. If you’re interested in rescuing a kitty or puppy I highly recommend visiting Petfinder.com and search their massive database of homeless animals. I used Petfinder.com to find and rescue my first dog, Linus and Australian Shepherd mix.

Happy Friday! I hope you enjoyed today’s video! If you have any questions please leave us a comment in the comment section below.

Are we really the Best Dog Blog? After checking my Google Analytics statistics I noticed an extra trickle of traffic coming from the Technorati website. Technorati is a blog directory and ranks blogs based on something they call “Authority.” Here’s a couple lines from Technorati explaining Authority:

Technorati Authority measures a site’s standing & influence in the blogosphere.

Authority is calculated based on a site’s linking behavior, categorization and other associated data over a short, finite period of time. A site’s authority may rapidly rise and fall depending on what the blogosphere is discussing at the moment, and how often a site produces content being referenced by other sites

Go to this page to see a full explanation of Technorati Authority.

The Best Dog Blog!

Anyhow after noticing the extra trickle of traffic we visited Technorati and after poking around a bit stumbled across the Blog Directory and clicked to the “Pets” section of the blog directory. Low and behold the top pet blog is PuppyInTraining.com!

Here’s a screen shot just in case our ranking changes (I’m sure it will):

Our conclusion is that if PuppyInTraining.com is the top pet blog then according to Technorati we must also be the best dog blog as well.

Thanks To Everyone!

We just wanted to send off a quick thanks to everyone for supporting our blog. We would never have reached the distinction as top pet blog in Technorati without support from family, friends, subscribers, and all the visitors who find their way to the Puppy In Training site.

Please keep stopping by the blog, subscribing, commenting, and linking to our articles. Who knows? Maybe one day we’ll break into the Top 100 list on Technorati or dare I say compete for the number one overall position?

For Your Information: The current number one site overall site on Technorati is The Huffington Post. I read they received 13 million unique visitors in March 2010 with 18 page views per unique.

What do you think? Is Puppy In Training the best dog blog?

Over the last few years I’ve had the chance to interact with many different dog breeds and have found there are many different breeds that I would consider good dogs for kids. In fact, a couple years ago I was so interested in dogs good with children I wrote a two part article about the top 10 dogs good with children based on information gathered from the internet and my own opinion.

Since then I’ve received many comments on the article suggesting other breeds be included in my top 10 list. I definitely agree that dogs that are good with children shouldn’t be narrowed to only a list of 10 dog breeds. However, that is the main reason why I wrote the article and left the comment section open to our readers. I wanted our readers input on their experiences with dogs and their thoughts on what dog are good with children.

Good Dogs For Kids

Some might think a giant breed dog might not be good for kids. After all a giant breed might be clumsy and knock over children or might get overly excited and play to rough possibly hurting kids.

A couple days ago I came across this video of a Great Dane playing with a very young child. Take a look:

Maybe I should include the Great Dane as one of my top 10 family dogs! That is an adorable video and I love seeing how gentle a dog as large as a Great Dane can be with a young child.

What do you think? Have you found the perfect dog for your family? What dog breeds would you consider good dogs for kids?
