Do you ever have dogs that don’t graduate from your training program for one reason or another? What happens to the dogs that aren’t able to be placed as a service animal?

@Sarah, thanks for visiting our website. Yes, we do have dogs that do not graduate from our training program. According to the Guide Dogs of America website approximately 40% of the dogs are removed from the program. As guide dog puppy raisers we have the first option to adopt the dogs who have been career changed. However, if we do not adopt the puppies we raised then they can enter the career change guide dog adoption program which is open to the public (unfortunately at this time GDA is not accepting new applications). Career changed guide dogs can also enter a different service (other than guide dog work). For instance, we recently had one of our puppies go into the search and rescue program.
