Linus here! Stetson and I had a long boring weekend, but we heard that Dad was up to a little bit of mischief at a thing called BlogPaws.
I waited by the front door for Dad most of the weekend, but I did get a little sunbathing in on the patio too (I was still keeping my eyes and ears open for Dad)
I’m getting some sun out on the patio!
Dad did a terrible job taking pictures at BlogPaws. He said he was too worried about his PetSmart Build A Business Blog Case Study Presentation. I guess so because when he got home he had a grand total of 5 pictures from BlogPaws! 5!? And zero pictures of dogs! Pathetic!
Dad said the Sheraton was an awesome host for BlogPaws 2012. They’ve been added to the top of our list for Pet Friendly Hotels. If you’re looking for a Pet Friendly hotel in Salt Lake City I’d highly recommend the Sheraton.

There were lots of interesting Pet Bloggers at BlogPaws. One of Dad’s favorites was the Giant Hamsters blog. Well, not really Giant Hamsters, but actually a pet called a Capybara which looks like a 115 lb giant hamster. It’s not just that we thought Capybara’s were cool pet’s, but when we discovered the name ROUS Foundation we had to start quoting some of our favorite lines from the Princess Bride. ROUS is short for Rodents Of Unusual Size. Until this past weekend I thought they only existed in the Fire Swamps from Princess Bride…Inconceivable!
Capybara – ROUS Rodents Of Unusual Size
Hopefully Dad did a good job on his presentation because he sure as heck did not do a good job with his camera. At least he did okay bringing home some swag for us. Check out this spread:
Hey, what’s up with all the cat swag! We’re ‘Pups In Training” not “Cats In Training”!
When Dad finally came home we smelled a million different things on him. I think he was hanging around some other dogs…grrrr…but he also had a bag full of treats so he’s forgiven. Maybe next year he’ll take us along to this so-called BlogPaws Conference.
So at the end of the day we asked what is BlogPaws really about?
BlogPaws is the gathering place for pet bloggers and the BlogPaws Conference is a pet blogging and social media conference. It’s a great place to network with your fellow pet bloggers as well as big name brands like PetSmart. The conference is packed with great information on many topics to improve your blog including social media marketing, monetization, traffic building and much more. There are several breakout sessions throughout the day, keynote speeches, as well as time to meet with the sponsors and exhibitors…did I mention you will come home with a pile of pet swag!
From BlogPaws website:
BlogPaws is an online community site for pet bloggers, pet enthusiasts, pet people on Twitter and Facebook and brands eager to tap into a growing, vibrant, vocal community of serious writers, bloggers, tweeters. We are the go-to resource for pet people and brands to partner on projects and campaigns, to be educated on social media, and to arrange face-to-face meetings all over the country. [Read More]
Can you believe Dad didn’t even get a picture with his pal Snoopy! BOOOOO!!!! Dad says he had an awesome time at BlogPaws and was so happy to meet so many dedicated pet bloggers! Like I said maybe we’ll get the invite to next years event…
Linus, Stetson, and Apache write a guest post every Monday called “Monday Mischief“, where they talk about their mischief, antics, and adventures from the past weekend.
I'm glad Linus likes to work on these technical issues.
About 2 months ago we entered the BlogPaws/PetSmartBuild A Business Blog Contest. Our original entry was just an application with some basic information about our Puppy In Training Blog along with a bit of information about why we wanted to build a business blog. We ended up as 1 of 10 finalists for the Build A Biz Blog Contest (congratulations to all the finalists) and our second step in the competition was to submit a 2 minute video that brings to life the reasons we want to build a business blog – enhancing and elaborating on our written entry.
We were given a couple weeks to work on our video entries and after some hard work prepping a script, shooting, and editing video here’s what we produced.
Why We Want To Build A Business Blog Video Edition
Our Entry into the Build A Biz Blog Contest:
Did you guys like the video? Guess what? We ended up being 1 of the 2 grand prize winners for the Build A Biz Blog Competition along with Snoopys Blog (Congratulations Snoopy and Annette)!
We were a bit surprised because we really aren’t video gurus. Besides our Puppy In Training TV series and a few product video reviews we really don’t know too much about video production. Obviously Linus took the the reigns and guided us to victory. Thanks Linus!
A Few Notes On How We Produced Our Video
Google Docs – I used Google Docs as text editor to write my script.
Gorillapod Video Tripod (affiliate link) – The gorillapods are tiny tripods with flexible legs that allow you to attach the gorillapod and camera to many different things like walls, trees, bushes, etc. and are great for shooting video of yourself. This model has magnets in the legs.
I'm glad Linus likes to work on these technical issues.
I’m no video expert, but here’s a little step-by-step of my process creating the video.
Brainstorm Ideas – This took the most time as I tried to figure out exactly what I wanted to do in the video and jotted down notes.
Write The Script – My script is a 2 column table. The left column I write what I want to say. The right column I describe the video clip I want to shoot.
Shoot The Video – After I write the script I have an idea of all the clips I want. I work with my talent (the doggies), get them ready for their roles, and finally shoot the video using my flip and trusty Gorillapod.
Edit The Video – I upload the clips to iMovie then edit the videos using my MacBook Pro and iMovie.
Re-Shoot Video – After editing I re-shot a couple clips to get them exactly as I wanted them.
Re-Edit Video – I add the new clips and finish up the editing
Final Review – After I’m totally done with everything I gave myself 1 additional day to take a second look at the video and made some minor edits.
Upload Video – Final step was to upload the video to the FTP site so the judges could review them.
A Couple More Small Notes
I added music to my original video that had a royalty free license through iMovie, but after reviewing the Build A Biz Contest rules I decided adding music may have been in violation of contest rules so I pulled all the music.
I made sure to blur over any logos. Again I wanted to make sure and stay within the rules of the competition.
Overall I wanted to make a video that brought to life the reasons I wanted to build a business blog. I wanted to make it somewhat humorous and entertaining. Finally, I decided to put it in the voice of one of my dogs (who sounds curiously like me).
I was very happy with the final results and especially happy after hearing that we were 1 of the 2 grand prize winners!
By the way I did see a couple other of the contest finalists posted their entries on their blogs. Take a look:
We’re so excited that we (the Puppy In Training Blog) won the BlogPaws/PetSmart Build A Business Blog Contest.
We submitted our blog to the contest back at the beginning of March.
We put together a blog post (check it out because their were 10 excellent finalists) announcing that we were a finalist for the PetSmart Blog to Biz Contest.
Next we put together a video to try and bring together our vision of building a biz blog to life.
And today we heard that PuppyInTraining.com was a grand prize winner!
Did we mention there were 2 winners? The other Blog to Biz winner was Snoopy’s Blog. If you haven’t already you should check out Snoopy’s excellent blog. He and his mum, Annette already have a vibrant community there and we’re sure they will do a great job working with PetSmart towards building a business blog.
Blog Paws 2012 Here We Come!
Blog Paws Conference
We’re very excited for the coming months. Not only do we get a chance to work with PetSmart to build PuppyInTraining.com into a business blog, but we’re also very excited that we get to participate in the Blog To Business Case Study at BlogPaws 2012! We’re not going to be sleeping for a couple days from all of this excitement!
Thanks to BlogPaws and PetSmart for sponsoring this competition. This is such a wonderful opportunity not only for us, but as Yvonne said in her blog post: “This contest has far reaching potential, not just for our winners, but for everyone who participated, and for all the BlogPaws 2012 attendees.”
Congratulations to everyone and I can’t wait to start working with PetSmart and I’m also very excited to meet everyone at BlogPaws 2012!
I’ve been working on the Puppy In Training Blog for nearly 5 years now writing about my experiences and puppy training tips as a guide dog puppy raiser. You may have noticed over the years that from time to time I make changes to the design by adding Google AdSense, Sponsored Ads in the sidebar, and affiliate links to Amazon.com. This brings in a little bit of income to help cover the costs of hosting my blog and also allows me to make more donations to my favorite guide dog groups, animal rescues, and charities.
This bit of money helps, but it’s not enough for me to consider the Puppy In Training Blog a business.
Needless to say, I was excited that I might have the opportunity to work with a PetSmart Social Media Expert to try and move my blog to the next level. Conference calls, coaching, and homework assignments sounded exactly like what I need to turn my blog into a business.
I decided to submit the Puppy In Training Blog into the competition and one week later I found out that this blog was one of the top 10 finalists!
Top 10 Finalists For Build A Business Blog Contest
Here it is! In no particular order the top 10 finalists for the build a business blog contest sponsored by PetSmart and BlogPaws:
Congratulations to the 10 finalists! I’m honored to be in the company of these great blogs!
Thank you so much to the judges, BlogPaws, and PetSmart! I really appreciate the opportunity you are giving us to improve our blogs.
So you’re a finalist…now what? These 10 finalists are now required to submit a 2 minute video telling the judges exactly why they should win this fun, fantastic opportunity to take their blog to the next level.
And what happens should we win?
Two lucky winners will receive a free pass to attend BlogPaws 2012 and will work with PetSmart to enhance their blog leading into BlogPaws 2012. You can expect conference calls, homework assignments, coaching and more – AND you can help present your key learnings with PetSmart during a blogger panel on this topic.
I think I’m equally as excited that I might have the opportunity to present my key learnings with PetSmart during a blogger panel on this topic!
Now all I have to do is put together a super awesome 2 minute video to try and win over the judges. I’m hoping some of my readers could help me out here. Does anyone out there have any great ideas I could use in my video? Let me know in the comment section below.
Do you have an adorable puppy who’s driving you nuts? Not long ago we brought home our first guide dog puppy and after the initial excitement wore off we soon realized we were in for an extreme test of our patience.
My name is Colby and I’ve been raising and training guide dog puppies for the past 5 years. Follow me and my pups on our journey from puppy to working guide dog.
