Pet Adoption Fair – 5th Annual Home For The Holidays

The 5th Annual Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair at the Irvine Animal Care Center is right around the corner.  Every year I remember this event because it almost always coincides with my birthday (December 5th for all you well wishers out there).  We try our best to make it out to this event every year as it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away from our house.  One cool thing about this pet adoption is that you’re allowed to bring your fully vaccinated, well-behaved, leashed dog if you so choose.

So, if you’re looking for a dog, cat, rabbit, or other pet (yep, we’ve even seen pigs at the irvine animal care center) then come on down to the Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Fair this Saturday, December 3rd from 10am to 3pm.  You’ll probably see us down their snapping a few pictures of the adoptable puppies and dogs.

What To Do At The Pet Adoption Fair

We’ve gone in the past and it’s mainly about pet adoption gathering many different pet rescues to show their dogs, puppies, cats, and kitties to the public.  We’ve heard that in the past the Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair has been very successful in getting pets adopted just in time for Christmas.

Here’s some more information on the Home For The Holidays.

  • 400+ Adoptable Animals
  • 70+ Vendors and Exhibitors
  • Food Court and Bake Sale
  • Ask the Vet and Trainer Booths
  • Silent Auction and Drawings
  • Low-cost Microchip

Cost for admission into this event is $1 and as I mentioned earlier they allow you to bring your fully vaccinated, well-behaved, leashed dog.

Here’s a link to the Irvine Animal Care Center main page where you can see and FAQ section and a list of the Animal Rescues, Vendors, and Exhibitors.

Linus my first puppy was adopted from the Carson animal shelter and we’ve also volunteered as foster parents for dogs and puppies so we very much support pet adoption. If you’re considering getting that next dog or puppy please consider pet adoption and by all means visit this years Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair.  We’ll be there this Saturday…How about you?  Have you been in the past or do you plan on going this weekend.  Let us know if you’ve adopted a puppy from this event in the past or this Saturday.  We’d love to hear about your new adopted pet!

Super Pet Adoption Event In Irvine

The 5th Annual Super Pet Adoption Event is right around the corner and is being held at the Irvine Animal Care Center on June 11th from 10am – 4pm.  We’ve made it a point to visit this event every year even though it is held on the same day as our Guide Dogs of America Open house.  If you’re interested in adopting a new pet and you live in the Orange County, California area we highly recommend you go to the Super Pet Adoption!

In the past we’ve learned some interesting animal shelter facts and statistics at the Super Pet Adoption.

Super Pet Adoption

Here are some of the details on this years event:

WHAT: 5th Annual Super Pet Adoption Event
WHEN: June 11th, 2011 from 10am-4pm
WHERE: Irvine Animal Care Center
6443 Oak Canyon Road, Irvine, CA

Super Pet Adoption

In the past we’ve seen some pretty cool things at the Super Pet Adoption.  They have more than just dogs and cats we also saw adoptable roosters, bunnies, and pigs in the past.  A few years back we won a gift certificate to a local veterinarian at the silent auction and had the opportunity to ask the veterinarian and dog trainer questions. There will be 800+ Adoptable Animals, 100+ Exhibitors, Silent Auction, Opportunity Drawing, Ask the Vet and Trainer Booths, Low-Cost Microchips. Click here to download the event flyer.

We did notice a few differences this year.  They are charging a small fee of $1 to get into this years event.  In the past this was a free event so I guess this year they are charging a small fee to defray some of their costs.  Also, after looking over the list of exhibitors I did not see our organization, Guide Dogs of America on the list.  In the past GDA has always had a booth at this event to let people know more about puppy raising and how to be come a Guide Dog puppy raiser.  If you’re interested in becoming a guide dog puppy raiser please feel free to contact me through our contact form or just leave me a comment in the comment section below.

For detailed information on all the exhibitors, rescues, and vendors that will be at the Super Pet Adoption visit the City of Irvine website.

Are you planning on attending this years Super Pet Adoption in Irvine?  Have you gone to this event in the past?  If so, we’d love to hear your thoughts about the Irvine Animal Care Centers Super Pet Adoption in the comment section below.!

We’re going to do our best to make it out to this years pet adoption.  However, we’re going to leave the boys at home (sorry, Dublin, Stetson and Linus).

Dawg Walk, Pet Faire, and Dog Adoption Event

Every year Guide Dogs of America has a booth at the  Mission Viejo Dog Walk (also known as the DAWG Walk), Pet Faire, and Dog Adoption Event.  Every year I’m busy with one thing or another and can’t attend this event.  I hope to change that trend this year!

Thinking back in time…last year I didn’t have a Guide Dog Puppy.  Two years ago, Derby was too young to work at the booth.  This year I’m going to do my best to help out at the Dawg Walk.  Here’s the information on this years Dawg walk, Pet Faire, and Dog Adoption Event:

Reggie, The Golden Retriever

I’m puppy sitting a young Golden Retriever Guide Dog Puppy In Training named Reggie during the Dog Walk.  I’d like to take Reggie over to help out at the Guide Dog booth at this years Mission Viejo DAWG WALK.  Unfortunately, there is an outside chance that she is too young to work the booth.  We like to make sure we only take our puppies to age appropriate events.  An event like the DAWG WALK may be too stressful for some younger puppies and we want to set all of our puppies up for success whether she’s a guide dog puppy in training or a family pet.

Are you planning on going to this years Mission Viejo Dog Walk?  If so, please stop by and visit the Guide Dogs of America booth.

IAMS Home 4 The Holidays Aims To Place 1.5 Millions Pets

Last weekend we attended the Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption at the Irvine Animal Shelter.  It was great to see all the wonderful volunteers working to get animals placed before the holidays.  While dogs seem to dominate the pet adoption there were also cats, birds, bunnies, and even a pig.

We do our best here at Puppy In Training to promote our local shelters and rescues and also advertise upcoming adoption events including the aforementioned Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption, the Super Adoption, and the OC Pet Expo.

This year we were contacted to participate in a larger adoption event.  The IAMS Home 4 the Holidays and Hillary Swank aim to place 1.5 million pets in homes this holiday season.   This is a very admirable goal and we are all for people adopting homeless animals from our shelters and rescues.

IAMS Home 4 the Holidays

IAMS Home 4 the Holidays

Here are some facts from the IAMS Home 4 the Holidays website:

  • As many as 8 million animals are homeless in the U.S.
  • Nearly 4 million orphaned dogs and cats will be euthanized this year due to shelter over-crowding and lack of awareness about the importance of pet adoption.
  • More than 25 percent of all dogs in shelters are purebreds.
  • IH4TH helped 1,202,751 pets find homes last year alone.
  • In Oct. 2008 Hilary Swank adopted Rumi through IH4TH at a Los Angeles shelter.
  • Over the past decade more than 3 million pets –1,638,515 dogs, 1,505,690 cats and 134,062 “other” animals – have been adopted through IH4TH.

Those numbers are staggering and for those of you looking for a purebred dog – “25% of all dogs in shelters are purebred.”

Even though we are advocates of pet adoption we would also like to point out that you should carefully plan and evaluate your own situation before you make the decision to adopt a new pet.  A new pet in your family is a tremendous responsibility and adopting a cat or dog is usually a 10+ year commitment.

One final thought…If your thinking about getting a dog, cat, puppy, kitten as a gift then please read my article on Christmas Puppies before you make that decision.  A pet as a gift is usually not a wise decision.

We’re happy be a part of the IAMS Home 4 the Holidays blogging program and hope to see them reach their goal of 1.5 million pets adopted this holiday season.

We did receive one update notifying us that 621,034 pets had been adopted since October 1st, 2009.  That’s great!  We’re well on our way to reaching the 1.5 million goal.

Please leave us a comment if you adopt a pet in the coming weeks.  We’d love to hear about your experience and see some pictures of your new pet.

Fun And Excitement At OC Market Place Pet Days

Did you guys visit Pet Days at the OC Market Place this past weekend? I hope some of you were in attendance. I know my mom, dad, and sister made it out there. I even heard my mother purchased a new cat tower that almost reaches her ceiling.

I also made it to the event, but unfortunately Derby had to stay at home. After much deliberation (in my mind) I decided it might not be a great activity for Derby as there would be lots of strange dogs and people that at 5 months of age could be a little overwhelming for a puppy. Anyways, as our Guide Dogs of America group leader told me Derby doesn’t have to do everything you do.

Pet Days

Anyhow, back to the Pet Days event. It was a little smaller than I expected, but had a nice turn out during the time I was there. There were several cool things going on besides the pet adoptions. The main stage was showcasing puppies and dogs who needed homes. I also was lucky enough to catch the Le PAWS Pet Agency do a little obedience and trick work on the stage.

While dogs seemed to be the main attraction they were not the only pets on display. We ran into booths from dog breed specific, to pet product booths, dog sitting and boarding, Parrot rescues, Guinea Pig rescues, and of course cats and kittens were up for adoption as well.

Another popular attraction were the soccer collies. A couple soccer loving collies were willing to take on anybody who could kick the ball on a giant inflatable arena.

Thanks To All The Rescues

I did have a chance to talk to several of the volunteers at the different rescues and I’d just like to say thanks to everyone working so hard to find these animals a home. As one volunteer mentioned to me “Aren’t these people amazing…how much they love these animals and gather to help them find a good home.”

I agree, they are amazing people and I’m so happy they organize events such is this one.

Here are a few pictures of puppies I saw while visiting the different booths:

This little guy was up for adoption at the Cuddly Canines Rescue and I believe it said that he had a Chow Chow mommy. It sure looks like he didn’t get the Chow Chow fur:

A couple more puppies from the Cuddly Canines Rescue. These little guys had a Shepherd mommy and from the looks of these two and their siblings may have have had two different daddy dogs.

Animal Assistance League of Orange County

Another thanks to the Animal Assistance League or Orange County for coordinating the event. As it says on their website:

The Animal Assistance League of Orange County is a non-profit no kill humane society dedicated to aiding lost and homeless pets, helping people with pet related problems, promoting responsible pet-ownership and pet population control, and preventing cruelty to animals through educational programs.

I always enjoy going to these pet related events and hopefully some of you made it to the Pet Days at the OC Market Place as well. My mother made it to the Pet Days on Sunday and told me: “We’re hoping the OC Market Place has a Pet Day at least once a month. It’s such a good way to promote pet adoptions.”

Did you go to the Pet Days at the OC Market Place last weekend? If so, what did you think?

First “Pet Days” At The Orange County Market Place

Guess what’s just around the corner? No, not Halloween (although it is, so go get your dog costumes ready)…it’s the First “Pet Days” at the Orange County Market Place.

This sounds like a great event…it sounds like it’s a mini-Pet Expo with specialty rescue and adoption groups, information on pet wellness, spaying and neutering and other animal welfare education; pet related vendors; guest speakers and demonstrations and non-profit pet organizations.

First “Pet Days” at The Orange County Market Place

Costa Mesa, CA – As part of National Pet Wellness Month, the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O. C. Fair and Event Center, will host Pet Days, Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2008 presented by the Animal Assistance League of Orange County.

What: First “Pet Days” at The Orange County Marketplace

When: October 11th and 12th, 2008: 7am – 4pm

Where: Orange County Fair and Event Center
88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA

Admission: Regular admission is $2. Click the image below to download one free admission coupon.

Vendors And Exhibitors

Unfortunately, space and participant application deadlines are past due so if you were interested in being a vendor or exhibitor you’ll have to wait until the next “Pet Days” event.

An added bonus is that the “Pet Days” event will be held in conjunction with the regular Orange County swap meet activities which includes over a 1,000 merchants selling various products and services.

Puppy’s In Training

For those of us with Guide Dog puppies in training this event is probably not suitable for any dog under 12 months of age. Unfortunately, Derby is way too young to attend this event. One of the things that we’ve learned as Guide Dog puppy raisers is to be sure we take our puppies only to age appropriate events. A large event with many people like this one is not appropriate for a young puppy who could be traumatized by all the activity going on during the event.

Age appropriateness is not only important for Guide Dog puppies in training, but for all dogs and puppies. So if you have a young puppy you do not want to over expose him to any “strenuous” or “traumatizing” events. “Strenuous” and “traumatizing” will vary depending on the age of your puppy.

I’ll be at the event (without Derby)…probably Saturday morning.  I hope to see you all there!

***One final note: Personal pets are not allowed on the premises of the Orange County Market Place.

3 Interesting Animal Shelter Facts

It was a busy weekend and I’ll probably write a few posts about it over the next couple days. Sunday afternoon we visited the Irvine Animal Shelter for the Orange County Super Pet Adoption. As I mentioned in a previous post I visited the Pet Adoption last year, but this years event was bigger and better. I saw our friends from Guide Dogs of America and also our other friends at Cuddly Canines.

One thing I noticed at this years Pet Adoption were several signs with some interesting animal facts. I don’t think I found all of them, but I did take pictures of three of the signs I did come across.

Interesting Animal Shelter Facts

FACT 1

Foster parents for homeless animals are desperately needed. Please sign up at the Information Booth.

Volunteering as a puppy/dog foster parent is a very rewarding endeavor. If you have the time and space I highly recommend looking into fostering. We’ve fostered several dogs and puppies with the rescue organization Cuddly Canines.

FACT 2

Did You Know… In 7 years one female cat and her offspring can give birth to 420,000 kittens.

Now that’s an interesting fact! One of my friends had several litters of ferral kittens constantly coming through their neighborhood. I guess if on cat can produce that many kittens I could see how the cat population can get out of hand.

FACT 3

Did You Know…Only 1 out of every 10 dogs born ever finds a permanent home.

That’s a sad fact. I was very happy to see that the Super Adoption Event has grown and hopefully brings more awareness to our community.

I’m sure there were several other interesting fact signs that I missed. Unfortunately I was a little short on time, but I’m glad I had the chance to visit this wonderful event again this year.

Did you make it to the Orange County Super Pet Adoption?  Did you have a good time?  Did you adopt an animal?
