Pet Adoption Fair – 5th Annual Home For The Holidays

The 5th Annual Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair at the Irvine Animal Care Center is right around the corner.  Every year I remember this event because it almost always coincides with my birthday (December 5th for all you well wishers out there).  We try our best to make it out to this event every year as it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away from our house.  One cool thing about this pet adoption is that you’re allowed to bring your fully vaccinated, well-behaved, leashed dog if you so choose.

So, if you’re looking for a dog, cat, rabbit, or other pet (yep, we’ve even seen pigs at the irvine animal care center) then come on down to the Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Fair this Saturday, December 3rd from 10am to 3pm.  You’ll probably see us down their snapping a few pictures of the adoptable puppies and dogs.

What To Do At The Pet Adoption Fair

We’ve gone in the past and it’s mainly about pet adoption gathering many different pet rescues to show their dogs, puppies, cats, and kitties to the public.  We’ve heard that in the past the Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair has been very successful in getting pets adopted just in time for Christmas.

Here’s some more information on the Home For The Holidays.

  • 400+ Adoptable Animals
  • 70+ Vendors and Exhibitors
  • Food Court and Bake Sale
  • Ask the Vet and Trainer Booths
  • Silent Auction and Drawings
  • Low-cost Microchip

Cost for admission into this event is $1 and as I mentioned earlier they allow you to bring your fully vaccinated, well-behaved, leashed dog.

Here’s a link to the Irvine Animal Care Center main page where you can see and FAQ section and a list of the Animal Rescues, Vendors, and Exhibitors.

Linus my first puppy was adopted from the Carson animal shelter and we’ve also volunteered as foster parents for dogs and puppies so we very much support pet adoption. If you’re considering getting that next dog or puppy please consider pet adoption and by all means visit this years Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair.  We’ll be there this Saturday…How about you?  Have you been in the past or do you plan on going this weekend.  Let us know if you’ve adopted a puppy from this event in the past or this Saturday.  We’d love to hear about your new adopted pet!

Irvine Pet Adoption – Home For The Holidays

Are you located in or around Orange County, CA and looking into Pet Adoption?  If so you should come out to the 4th annual Home For The Holidays Pet Adoption Fair! We wrote a little bit about last year’s Home For The Holidays, but unfortunately we weren’t able to attend.

We’re going to do our best to make it out to this years pet adoption.  However, we’re going to leave the boys at home (sorry, Dublin, Stetson and Linus).

-What is the price of admission?
Admission is $1 per person. Please bring cash for admission.

- Where do I park for the event? Is there a charge for parking?

- How much is the adoption fee to adopt an animal at the event?
Every rescue group and animal shelter present at the event will have their own adoption fees. Please check with the rescue group or animal shelter to find out their adoption fees, what is included in the fee, and what requirements the organization has to adopt the pet.

Yes. The IACC will be offering $20 off dog, cat and rabbit adoptions completed on event day.

What Things Should I Consider Before Getting A Dog?

It’s been years since I adopted my first dog and thought about the question: What Things Should I Consider Before Getting A Dog? Adopting a dog is a huge decision and something you should not take lightly.

My girlfriend took me shopping several years ago…not for any old gift, but she planned on getting me a puppy as a birthday gift.  I was very hesitant at first, but we spent a wonderful day visiting several breeders and playing with puppies.  However, I did not make my final decision on whether a puppy would be right for me until over a month later.

I bought several books which not only outlined puppy training, but also the things you should consider before taking home that adorable puppy.

Here are a few things I considered before bringing a new puppy into my household:

What Things Should I Consider Before Getting A Dog?

  1. Researching the breeds - I did a lot of research into dog breeds considering my own lifestyle and how that would mesh with my new puppy.  I even considered the future thinking that I might need a dog good with children.  In the end I ended up getting a mixed breed dog, but he was supposedly mixed with two of the breeds I was considering: Labrador Retriever and Australian Shepherd.
  2. Shelter, Rescue, or Breeder – We initially visited several breeders.  However, it didn’t sit quite right with me.  I new there were many unwanted dogs and puppies at our local shelters and rescues.  I started searching for a puppy on Petfinder.com and ended up rescuing a puppy from the Carson Shelter in Los Angeles County.
  3. Financial Situation – There are a lot of expenses to consider when adopting a new dog…just ask my friends who have spent over $10,000 on a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the first couple years.  When I first brought Linus home from the shelter he had some serious issues including a stomach virus, extreme fleas, he was lethargic, and had worms.  Vet bills aren’t the only thing to consider.  Food, toys, grooming supplies, flea and tick medication, dog training, collars, leashes, etc.  Those are just a few expenses you will encounter over the lifespan of your dog.  Not to mention he may destroy a few things near and dear to your heart.
  4. Dog Training - In my book, every dog needs to be trained.  How do you plan on training your dog?  Go to the store and get some books or DVD’s, take your dog to group training, private in-house training, find useful information on the internet, etc.  There are all kinds of things to do for dog training.  Just be sure to devote the time and effort to training your dog.  I took Linus to puppy group training and then basic obedience training directly after.  Since then I’ve taken Linus to basic obedience on three other separate occasions to keep him up to speed on his dog training.
  5. Time/Attention for the dog – This was probably the most important thing for me to consider and also the reason why I didn’t get a dog in the past.  I was actually taking time off from work for about a year and instead attending school.  I was also on winter break and had about 5 weeks to work on puppy training 24/7.  Those initial 5 weeks of constant supervision, in the end, really made him a well rounded dog.
  6. Lifespan – Your dog won’t live for ever, but I’d plan on having him for at least the next 10 years.  I’m hoping that Linus lives 15+ years.
  7. Other Pets – We had a young cat that we were a little concerned might not accept our new puppy.  However, the two got along famously and became best of friends.

Those are just a few things I considered before getting a dog.  There are many other important things you might want to take into consideration as everyone is at a different place in their life and in a different situation.

The biggest thing I can say is get out there and educate yourself!  Read a good book like the Puppies For Dummies (affiliate link) book, do some online research (if you found this article then you’ve probably already started this process), talk to your friends, talk to dog trainers and veterinarians, make sure you do your due diligence before you make that final plunge and adopt a puppy.

What do you think?  What things should I consider before getting a dog?

Riverside Humane Society Raises Over 46K

Wow!  $46,000 raised at the Riverside (CA) Humane Society Pet Adoption Center’s 12th Annual Comedy Night.  That’s pretty cool and very encouraging to see that there are so many generous people in our community.

The main reason this article caught my attention is because the Riverside Animal Shelter is where we picked up the seven little German Shepherd puppies that we fostered for two months.  We also made several other trips to the shelter as volunteers and fosters for the Cuddly Canines Rescue.

My brother and his wife adopted George: the cute little (he’s ginormous now!) black and tan puppy in the bottom right corner.

Riverside Animal Shelter

It’s wonderful that so many people were able to donate to Riverside Humane Society.  However, I have heard that the Riverside Animal Shelter receives way more animals then they can handle so please if you have the time I’d encourage you to volunteer as a foster with an organization like Cuddly Canines Rescue that saves many puppies and dogs that would otherwise be euthanized.

I must reiterate that it’s great to see so many people give their hard earned money during these difficult economic times.

Here’s the link to the original article: Over $46,000 Raised at Riverside (CA) Humane Society Pet Adoption Center’s 12th Annual Comedy Night.

Have you been volunteering with a rescue organization?  If so, we’d love to hear about it in the comments section below.

First “Pet Days” At The Orange County Market Place

Guess what’s just around the corner? No, not Halloween (although it is, so go get your dog costumes ready)…it’s the First “Pet Days” at the Orange County Market Place.

This sounds like a great event…it sounds like it’s a mini-Pet Expo with specialty rescue and adoption groups, information on pet wellness, spaying and neutering and other animal welfare education; pet related vendors; guest speakers and demonstrations and non-profit pet organizations.

First “Pet Days” at The Orange County Market Place

Costa Mesa, CA – As part of National Pet Wellness Month, the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O. C. Fair and Event Center, will host Pet Days, Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2008 presented by the Animal Assistance League of Orange County.

What: First “Pet Days” at The Orange County Marketplace

When: October 11th and 12th, 2008: 7am – 4pm

Where: Orange County Fair and Event Center
88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA

Admission: Regular admission is $2. Click the image below to download one free admission coupon.

Vendors And Exhibitors

Unfortunately, space and participant application deadlines are past due so if you were interested in being a vendor or exhibitor you’ll have to wait until the next “Pet Days” event.

An added bonus is that the “Pet Days” event will be held in conjunction with the regular Orange County swap meet activities which includes over a 1,000 merchants selling various products and services.

Puppy’s In Training

For those of us with Guide Dog puppies in training this event is probably not suitable for any dog under 12 months of age. Unfortunately, Derby is way too young to attend this event. One of the things that we’ve learned as Guide Dog puppy raisers is to be sure we take our puppies only to age appropriate events. A large event with many people like this one is not appropriate for a young puppy who could be traumatized by all the activity going on during the event.

Age appropriateness is not only important for Guide Dog puppies in training, but for all dogs and puppies. So if you have a young puppy you do not want to over expose him to any “strenuous” or “traumatizing” events. “Strenuous” and “traumatizing” will vary depending on the age of your puppy.

I’ll be at the event (without Derby)…probably Saturday morning.  I hope to see you all there!

***One final note: Personal pets are not allowed on the premises of the Orange County Market Place.

3 Interesting Animal Shelter Facts

It was a busy weekend and I’ll probably write a few posts about it over the next couple days. Sunday afternoon we visited the Irvine Animal Shelter for the Orange County Super Pet Adoption. As I mentioned in a previous post I visited the Pet Adoption last year, but this years event was bigger and better. I saw our friends from Guide Dogs of America and also our other friends at Cuddly Canines.

One thing I noticed at this years Pet Adoption were several signs with some interesting animal facts. I don’t think I found all of them, but I did take pictures of three of the signs I did come across.

Interesting Animal Shelter Facts

FACT 1

Foster parents for homeless animals are desperately needed. Please sign up at the Information Booth.

Volunteering as a puppy/dog foster parent is a very rewarding endeavor. If you have the time and space I highly recommend looking into fostering. We’ve fostered several dogs and puppies with the rescue organization Cuddly Canines.

FACT 2

Did You Know… In 7 years one female cat and her offspring can give birth to 420,000 kittens.

Now that’s an interesting fact! One of my friends had several litters of ferral kittens constantly coming through their neighborhood. I guess if on cat can produce that many kittens I could see how the cat population can get out of hand.

FACT 3

Did You Know…Only 1 out of every 10 dogs born ever finds a permanent home.

That’s a sad fact. I was very happy to see that the Super Adoption Event has grown and hopefully brings more awareness to our community.

I’m sure there were several other interesting fact signs that I missed. Unfortunately I was a little short on time, but I’m glad I had the chance to visit this wonderful event again this year.

Did you make it to the Orange County Super Pet Adoption?  Did you have a good time?  Did you adopt an animal?

Puppy Adoption – Fiona The Lhasa Apso Mix

It’s been a while since I profiled a puppy from the Cuddly Canines website. As always if you are considering puppy adoption, I highly recommend visiting one of your local puppy/dog rescues. In past articles I’ve talked to you about the puppy/dog rescue, Cuddly Canines. I want to do my best to help place these puppies by profiling each puppy, litter of puppies, and dogs on this blog.

***Note this dog may already be adopted as I will keep this information in my archive. Please check the Cuddly Canines website for the most recent puppies up for adoption.

Fiona The Lhasa Apso Mix

Lhasa Apso Mix

Lhasa Apso Mix

Fiona

Fiona is a 2 year old Lhasa mix who weighs about 18 pounds. She is a sweet gal who needs a home to call her own. She was severely matted, so she had to be shaved down, which is a perfect hairdo for the hot weather we have been having. She gets along great with other dogs, but is a bit too curious about kitty cats, so a feline-free home would be best for her, unless you are willing to work on creating harmony. Fiona is a great gal with a very happy nature.

A friend of mine has a Lhaso Apso/Shih Tzu mixed puppy. I’m not too sure about the temperament of a purebred Lhaso Apso, but her dog is very calm and easy going everywhere except when he’s at home. At home he’s high energy and loves to play.

Are you interested in adopting?

If you are interested in adopting Fiona please visit the Cuddly Canines website. If you happen to adopt Fiona please remember, it’s never too early or too late to start her on her training. If you are interested in puppy adoption or fostering here are a few other articles you might enjoy:

14th Annual Dawg Walk, Pet Faire, And Dog Adoption Event

I almost forgot to write a short post about the 14th Annual Dawg Walk, Pet Faire, and Dog Adoption Event right here in Mission Viejo, CA.

This sounds like another great dog event located pretty close to my home here in Irvine, CA.  I first heard about the DAWG walk from one of our Orange County GDA members at last months group meeting.  At that time I didn’t know I was going to raise another puppy for GDA and was planning on attending this event.  As it turns out I’m raising a puppy from the “D” litter and will pick him up this Friday and may not be able to go to the DAWG Walk, Pet Faire, Dog Adoption (unless I can find a puppy sitter for a few hours).

Here are the details about the event straight from a newsletter I received:

The 14th Annual DAWG Walk, Pet Faire & Dog Adoption Event

Dawg LogoOn Saturday, June 28, 8:00 a.m. – Noon., the City of Mission Viejo Animal Services Center has joined the Dedicated Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) for an exciting event that animal lovers of all ages enjoy: The 14th Annual DAWG Walk, Pet Faire & Dog Adoption Event.

DAWG is a charitable, non-profit organization that raises money to pay medical costs for sick and injured orphaned animals in our community and at the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter allowing that shelter to remain pro-humane.

The staging area will be at the beautiful Thomas R. Potocki Conference Center & Soccer Fields in Mission Viejo, (27301 La Paz Rd. off Marguerite Pkwy. across from Commerce Center), and the DAWG Walk will take place on the scenic Oso Creek Trail, adjacent to the fields.

Mission ViejoIf you participated in past years, you know that over 40 businesses, animal rescue and pet and wildlife organizations are represented, and the event includes entertainment groups (flyball, agility and disc dogs, sheriff’s mounted patrol and their horses), music, refreshments, contests and prizes. The June morning temperature has proven to be perfect for both K9s and their people (and the scenic Oso Creek Trail will be in full bloom)!

What: 14th Annual DAWG WALK,PET FAIRE & DOG ADOPTION EVENT

When: Saturday, June 28, 2008, 8:00 a.m. to Noon (Booth setup begins at 7:00 a.m.)

Where: Potocki Center and Oso Creek Trail in Mission Viejo, 27301 La Paz Road (off Marguerite Parkway) at Potocki Drive

I hope it’s not as hot as last weekend. This event sounds like a lot of fun and I already know several of our Orange County GDA members plan on attending. As for me, I’m not quite sure yet. It will only be little “D” puppy’s second day at my house and unless I can find a puppy sitter (might not be too difficult) then I will be staying home with little “D”.

By the way, for those of you who are waiting for an update on “D” puppy’s name I called the puppy department at GDA, but our puppy program manager is in England right now and I won’t have a final word on his puppy name till this Thursday. I know….the suspense is killing me too.

Hopefully I can make it out to the 14th Annual Dawg Walk, Pet Faire, And Dog Adoption this Saturday.  If you attend let me know how it goes in the comment section below.
