You’ve Heard Of Surfin’ Bird, But What About Surfing Dog?

I’m sure many of you have heard the famous lyrics of Surfin’ Bird, but I’m not so sure you’ve all heard about surfing dogs.
Just in case you don’t remember Surfin’ Bird was released way back in 1963…well before I was born. However, the song seems to resurface every few years in pop culture most recently on the Family Guy. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about maybe this will help:

Ummm…Yep that’s pretty much the song…
Sorry, I get sidetracked sometimes…back to our subject: Surfing Dogs! We had heard about surfing dogs and surf dog competitions for years probably because we live only a few miles from the beach. However, this year is the first time we’ve been asked to volunteer at a booth representing Guide Dogs of America at the Surf City Surf Dog Event in Huntington Beach, California.
Surf City Surf Dog Weekend
Some of our guide dog puppy raiser friends have trained their career changed guide dog pups to surf. They have real surfing dogs! I’m not much of a surfer or a beach person so I never really considered teaching Stetson or Linus to surf. The other big problem in that equation is neither Stetson nor Linus really like the water…and yes, Stetson is a Lab…
It’s okay if you don’t have a surfing dog. You can still attend the Surf City Surf Dog Weekend as a spectator. However, if you have a dog that likes to surf then maybe you should consider entering him into the surf dog competition.

Surf City USA® Huntington Beach CA is going to the dogs! The premier dog surfing competition on the dog surfing circuit is three days of doggone fun for you, your human and canine family members!
As I mentioned we’ve been asked to help and represent Guide Dogs of America at one of the exhibition booths. I’m not too sure where we will be or what day we will be helping. I’ll get more details in the coming days and let you all know.
