Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #7

Welcome to another edition of the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival. We have several great articles in this edition. It seems like we’ve got everything for the dog lover in this carnival from a cantaloupe eating Malamute, dog training tips, even some great puppy t-shirt artwork

On with the blog carnival!

Blog Carnival #7

One of the reasons I love hosting the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival is it introduces me to many new blogs and website that I never would have discovered on my own. One of those sites is Carl Jagt’s Saturday Morning Tee of the Week. I’m going to assume that the Saturday Morning part of the title has something to do with Saturday Morning cartoons? Hopefully Carl will chime in and explain the motivation for his site title. Robot VS Puppy is an adorable concept for a t-shirt..I’m actually considering purchasing a few shirts for my dog lover friends. BONUS Material: after the image there’s entire write up explaining the inspiration for the drawing. If you want to check out the adorable image plus other great t-shirt concepts visit Carl Jagt’s Saturday Morning Tee of the Week.

Article #2 is our cantaloupe eating Alaskan Malamute starring in I May Be Housing A Fugitive. Written in a news story style you have to check out the damage this Alaskan Malamute did to an unsuspecting cantaloupe that was sitting on the counter. It reminds me of my little Puppy In Training, Derby who is a master at picking things up of the ground, couch, and tables. We’re working on it and he kind of understands the words “Drop It”

Our third article comes from a familiar site the Training Fido blog. This week’s article is about clicker training: Clicker Train Fido to Sit. This article is a great introduction to clicker training and gives you the basics on what clicker training is and how to get started. We worked on clicker training for a short period of time with Linus. His first trainer wasn’t that into clicker training, but she gave us an introduction and the concept of the training technique.

If you’re reading titles then it’s fairly self explanatory what the Dog Training Step-by-Step blog is about. This weeks article is very helpful indeed and is titled Don’t let Fido Pull You. This is something I’m constantly working on in dog obedience class. It seems like some dogs like to pull while others don’t want to walk at all.

How Pet Owner’s Can Deal With Dog Aggression is a great article on…you guessed it how to curb dog aggression.  One thing I’d like to point out in this article is “Start Early”  This is good advice and it’s important to expose your puppy to different environments, people, and situations at an early age, but you must also be careful that you do not over expose your puppy.  Make sure all of your activities are age appropriate for your puppy.

This is the exact question I was asking before I picked up Linus from the animal shelter… Finding A Reputable Dog Breeder. Technically it’s not a question, but you understand. This article gives you 8 questions you should be asking any breeder before buying a puppy. After reading this article you will definitely have a good idea of how to find a good breeder.

That’s it for this issue of the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival. If your interested in submitting an article to our next carnival please leave a comment below or submit your information through my contact form.

Hotel For Dogs Review

Derby and Colby MovieHave you been looking for a Hotel For Dogs Review? by a dog? Derby (my yellow lab puppy in training) and I went to see Hotel For Dogs this past weekend with several of our fellow puppy raisers. We had the chance to do some training before the movie and after the movie we went to eat dinner at the Lazy Dog Cafe.

Derby was so happy with the movie he wanted to write a review.

Hotel For Dogs Review

Derby’s (the dog) Review

It was great! I got lots of attention before and after the movie from dog lovers outside and inside the theater. My brother Dutch and other friends joined us, but sat on the other side of the theater ):

The movie was awesome. I saw a dog that looked just like me. I also saw dogs that looked like my stepbrother’s Stetson and Linus. I was able to cry during the movie (because it was sad) and no one noticed because there were so many dog noises happening during the movie. The star of the movie, “Friday” looked just like my cousin Ralphie. My favorite part were all the gadgets Bruce made for all the doggies. I hope someday I have my own tennis shoe vending machine.

I hope my daddy takes me to another movie really soon. If you can’t go to the movies try to get your mommy or daddy to rent Hotel For Dogs when it comes out on video.

Guide Dog GroupColby’s (the human) Review

I wasn’t expecting too much, but Hotel For Dogs was surprisingly good. Then again I am a dog lover. There were some great dog gadgets that we might have to someday create for the dogs. My favorite was the automated doors…not automated like you’d think. These doors were automated for dogs. When the dog ran to one door it would ring the door at the other door and when they got to that door a boot would kick at the opposite door…very clever. Another device that was pretty cool was very similar to the Dog Ball Launcher we featured last year.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the movie. If you’re a dog lover I definitely would recommend Hotel For Dogs.

Lazy Dog Cafe

After the movie we met up with more of our friends at the Lazy Dog Cafe. It was a great time and we got to socialize with other puppy raisers. Derby was good, but he insisted on relaxing half under Tammy’s chair and the other half under me. He’s definitely a long puppy.

Derby Down Under

There’s quite a variety of food at Lazy Dog Cafe. A few items I noticed on the menu were Pizza, Burgers, Chicken Pot Pie, Hawaiian Poke…definitely a variety. I had a Caesar Salad with Grilled Salmon – the semi-healthy choice. Derby did very well and even though he didn’t go to sleep he stayed underneath me (at least part of his body) the entire dinner and didn’t squirm much at all (very good for him around other dogs).

We had a great time and yep the second picture is Derby smooching with his brother Dutch in front of the theater. I can’t wait for our next Guide Dog group adventure!

Men Of National Geographic Channel Valentine’s Day Tips

Giant SalamanderWhen it comes to Valentine’s Day I am very much the amateur.  I guess I’ve spent too many V-day’s all by me onesies.   Anyhow, early this week I received an email about the Men of National Geographic Channel and their Valentine’s Day tips.  I enjoyed the tips and the images (especially the Giant Salamander) and decided to post the images here.   I broke the article into two posts because the images are a bit large.  I’ll post the second Men of NatGeo V-day post tomorrow (yep February 14th…V-Day!)

A few weeks ago, we asked a group of our hosts (a.k.a. the “Men of National Geographic Channel”) for any Valentine’s Day-related tips they might share with us. Below (and attached as PDF and JPEG files) are some of the best answers we received, including ones from Cear Millan of Dog Whisperer, and John Garcia of Dogtown.

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #6

Welcome back to another edition of the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival. We added a few new rules to try and generate more participation and it seems to be working out for everyone. Of course our goal at the Puppy In Training Carnival is to try and create community and I encourage everyone to visit the links and leave comments on these other blogs.

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #6

We have four submissions for this edition of the blog carnival. To get things started we have our first post simply labeled Puppy Pictures from the blog A Very Nearly Tea. It’s often times difficult to take pictures of your puppy…good pictures that is. That’s exactly what this article is about: getting the perfect puppy pictures. We had a similar article about taking pictures of Stetson and the difficulty we had getting good shots of him as a puppy. Check out Puppy Pictures to see Copper the Beagle and Hunter the Lab mix.

Our second article comes from Training Fido and teaches How To House Train a Dog – Easy Steps. This article list some of the tell tale signs of when your dog needs to go to the bathroom which is a key part of house training your dog. If you need some hints on how to house train your dog check out this article. One other thing mentioned in this article is consistency which is something we preach and is imperative when house training your dog.

Our next article covers the same subject as article 2…Housetraining A Dog, Potty Training A Puppy.  Some more great tips on house training your dog.  One thing that is mentioned in this article is controlling food/water intake and knowing your dogs pee/poop schedule.  Definitely check out this article if your having issues with doggy potty accidents in the house.

Finally the Dog Training blog covers one of our favorite breeds the German Shepherd Dog Training Essentials. The German Shepherd Dog is one of the most famous breeds around the world and a true working dog. It has also become most famous as a pet dog. They are very easily trained and loves to please their masters. This article describes the
essentials of owning and training a German Shepherd Dog.

Thanks to all the submitters for participating in the Puppy In Training blog carnival.  We’ll see you all next time!

Dachshund Mother Takes Care of Baby Goat

Do you remember last years story about the Dachshund Acts As Mom To Baby Piglet? We ran that article almost this same time last year. If you’ve been following along then you know that Tink the Dachshund mom was not feeling to well last time we spoke to Momma Johanna. Here’s the last update we had on Tink and Pink:

The Latest News On “The Pink Puppy”

Pink was doing well, but Tink was having a little bit of a medical problem. We went ahead and contacted Johanna to see if we could get an update on Tink and Pink and we were happy to hear that she’s doing much better and there was a little surprise to go with it.

I’ll go ahead and let the pictures do the talking and add Momma Johanna’s email update at the end:

Colby,

I actually do have an update. Tink is doing great..so far no more tumors! She seems very healthy, so keep your fingers crossed. Pink is going to turn one year old next week. We are going to have a little birthday party for him and Tink and I’ll try to get you some photos of that. I’m going to make him a marshmallow cake! He will love it.

Tink had another wonderful experience last weekend with a baby pygmy goat born on our farm. The mother had triplets and one of the babies was stillborn, one healthy and one was nearly frozen. My husband brought the little guy to the house and we worked on getting him warmed up and to get some milk in him to see if we could take him back to his mommy. Tink was excited and thought she had another new baby. If Tink had milk, she would have tried to nurse him. She laid with him while we were warming him up and licked him all over. Later that day he could walk and she followed him everywhere he went and mothered him. Unfortunately, the mommy goat died and the little billy goat and his sister were given to a family that had a few other bottle fed babies. So for those two days, she got to be a mommy again. Here is a few pictures of her with “Spencer”, the baby billy goat. There is always something going on our little farm..never a dull moment!

Be looking for another book in the near future from a major publishing company. I will let you know more about it when I can.

Take care,

Johanna

Lots of exciting news! We’ll be sure to keep everyone posted on Tink, Pink, Spencer, and Johanna’s new book. Thanks Johanna for the update!
