2nd Annual Pet Blogger Challenge

The beginning of the new year is a great time to reflect back on what you accomplished over the past year as well as look to the future.  I’ve been thinking about this (my goals) a lot over the past few days and although I don’t quite yet have a clear picture of what I’d like to do with my puppy training blog in the upcoming 12 months I do have some general ideas.

Pet Blogger Challenge Jan. 10This morning after browsing through my RSS Feeds I found a number of dog blogs participating in the Pet Blogger Challenge.  After reading through a few Pet Blogger Challenge Posts I decided that this would be a great way to take a quick glimpse at things we’ve done on the blog in the past and what we plan to do in the future.

So we went ahead and visited this post: Pet Blogger Challenge, followed the rules, answered a few questions and voila…we have today’s blog post!

1. When did you begin your blog?

I published my first blog post on PuppyInTraining.com way back on August 1st 2007.  My first post was basically the story about how I adopted my puppy, Linus from the animal shelter.  I remember being very concerned with my blog design (I used a free WordPress template and made a few customizations) and using a bunch of pictures of my first guide dog puppy in the heading (actually 2 are of Stetson my guide pup and 2 are Linus my rescue pup).  In fact I still have my original wordpress theme.  Here’s what it looked like:

First Blog Theme

This is the first Puppy In Training Blog theme

Since then I’ve published over 450 blog posts and changed my theme I believe 4 times.  My current theme is using the Genesis Framework (affiliate link).

2. What was your original purpose for starting a blog?

My original purpose for starting a blog was to document my journey raising a guide dog puppy in training.  I originally set it up to keep friends and family up to date on my first guide pup, Stetson’s progress on his way to becoming a working guide dog.

3. Is your current purpose the same?

Since I started the Puppy In Training Blog I’ve raised 3 guide dog pups and I’m currently raising a 4th.  The purpose of my blog has evolved a little bit since it’s beginnings and as technology has changed so has the purposed of my blog.

If not, what’s different?

As I mentioned the blog has evolved.  My main purpose and goal today is to offer “Puppy Training Tips From My Experiences As A Guide Dog Puppy Raiser”.  As I mentioned as technology has changed so has my blogging.  Today, I report a lot of my puppies activities using Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube rather than my blog.  For instance I post a lot of my pictures from outings on the Puppy In Training Facebook page.  I post short little tweets about what we’re doing on our Twitter page.  On YouTube we started our Puppy In Training TV channel and also post dog product video reviews.

The blog really brings everything together and as I mentioned today we use it to share our experiences in order to help others with their puppy training problems.

If so, how do you feel you’ve met your goals?

My friends and family still interact with me on the blog and also now on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube so I guess I did meet my original goals by keeping them up to date on our journey as guide dog puppy raisers.  The coolest part are the thousands of other people who also follow along and learn the in’s and out’s of raising a puppy.

4. Do you blog on a schedule or as the spirit moves you?

Recently it’s been “as the spirit moves me”, but in the past I’ve tried several different scheduling techniques.

If the former, how often — and what techniques do you use to stick to it?

As I mentioned in the past I’ve tried different scheduling techniques including blogging Monday thru Friday.  I also tried posting every day of the month.  We’ve even worked on posting only 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).  However, in the long run we haven’t stuck to any specific schedule.  In my experience I’ve had the best success sticking to a schedule by following this list:

  1. Decide on a schedule (3 days a week, 5 days a week, every day in a month)
  2. Brainstorm for ideas on a weekly or monthly basis
  3. For each idea create an initial topic/title
  4. Schedule the topics/titles for specific days using your blog software
  5. Expand each topic/title into a blog post before the scheduled publish date.
  6. Keep a back log of blog posts for busy days, vacation days, sick days, etc.
  7. Repeat the following week/month
I’m in the process of putting together a new schedule for my blog for the year.

If the latter, do you worry about… well, whatever you might worry about (e.g. losing traffic, losing momentum)?

I’m not good when I’m not on a schedule which is how I’m currently operating.  However, I don’t worry too much about losing traffic (a lot of my traffic comes from Search Engines), but I do worry about losing loyal readers.  I took a look at some of my numbers for the past few years and here’s what I found:

Google Analytics 2008

Google Analytics Stats 2008 -196 blog posts

Google Analytics 2009

Google Analytics Stats 2009 - 106 blog posts

Google Analytics 2010

Google Analytics Stats 2010 - 58 blog posts

Google Analytics 2011

Google Analytics Stats 2011 - 81 blog posts

My first post was on August 1st 2007 and I received virtually no traffic during those first few months besides the occasional visit from my mom, dad, and a few friends.  I didn’t even have Google Analytics installed until February 2008.  However, I did have Google AdSense installed during those early months and according to AdSense I received 1,528 page views from 25 blog posts during the time period: August 1st, 2007 – December 31st, 2007.

As you can see over the years my traffic has steadily climbed, but none more than in 2008, my first full year as a blogger.  I really stuck to a good schedule in 2008 and produced 196 blog posts and that’s what I’d like to get back to in 2012.

I’m going to try and be an overachiever this year and focus on producing on average 4 blog posts a week.  That means I should end the year with 208 blog posts and hopefully my most productive year as a blogger.  This goal is definitely attainable especially given the fact that it’s a leap year and I have an extra day to complete the task!

5. Are you generating income from your blog?

Yes, we actually made almost enough money to buy a cup of coffee in our first year of blogging.  We feel very lucky that we receive a little bit of money from our Puppy Training blog which helps to cover our hosting costs which shot way up this year thanks to a few traffic spikes back in April 2011 that forced us to move off our shared hosting plan.  Bluehost refused to reactivate our account so we moved to a HostGator (affiliate link) Virtual Private Server.   However, our income still exceeds our costs and this allows us to make more donations to some of our favorite non-profit organizations including Guide Dogs of America and Cuddly Canines Rescue.

If so, how (e.g. sponsor ads, affiliate relationships, spokesperson opportunities)?

The Puppy In Training Blog has actually been producing income starting in it’s first year, 2007 (although we didn’t receive an actual check until a few months in to 2008).  Way back in 2007 we made just over $1 with Google AdSense.  Since then we’ve made a little bit of money every month using mainly Google AdSense, Amazon Affiliates, Chitika, and a few other affiliate programs.  We’ve also dabbled in sponsored ads, posts, and text link advertising.

According to our Amazon Affiliates account we’ve sold over $25,000 worth of products since 2007.  However, it doesn’t amount to a ton of money since our commission is usually between 4% and 8% (usually closer to 4%).

Our Google AdSense Ads produced some of the highest single day earnings in 2011 and we nearly broke the $100 mark one day.   However, on average we receive much less than $100 a day.

None of our other forms of income individually produce more than $50 a month on average.   I made a few changes to this section of the post (1/21/2012) and it’s a little more vague then I’d like, but if you’re interested in chatting further on this topic then please feel free to contact me through our contact form.

If not currently, do you hope to in the future — and how?

We have a few plans to try and diversify our income in 2012 and hopefully should announce a few things in the coming weeks.

6. What do you like most about blogging in general and your blog in particular (bragging is good!)?

Some of our favorite things about blogging are:

  1. Making relationships with other bloggers.
  2. Helping people with their puppy training issues.
  3. Being part of an online community.
  4. Helping some of the organizations we volunteer for with monetary donations produced from the blog.
  5. Keeping connected with friends and family through the blog.

7. What do you like least?

  1. Feeling obligated to write a blog post
  2. Managing the technical aspects of the blog.  This seems to get worse as the blog grows.
  3. Dealing with negative people who visit the blog.
  4. Not having enough time to read and comment on other people’s pet blogs.

8. How do you see your blog changing/growing in 2012?

I’m hoping that 2012 will be a big year for the Puppy In Training blog.  A few of my goals off the top of my head are to:

  • Create and maintain new relationships with other pet bloggers
  • Work on my email newsletter
  • Create an e-book
  • Create a puppy training membership area for new puppy raisers

Thanks to Edie of Will My Dog Hate Me and Amy from the Go Pet Friendly Blog for hosting the 2nd Annual Pet Blogger Challenge.  We really got a lot out of not only thinking about our own blog, but also reading through the many other blogs participating in this years challenge.

How about you?  Did you participate in this years Pet Blogger Challenge?  What is the most interesting thing you learned from someone else’s Pet Blogger Challenge post?

6 Dog Blog Links You Should Not Miss

Welcome to this weeks Puppy In Training weekly roundup.  As we mentioned before we are doing our best to roundup our favorite dog blog posts from the past week across our favorite doggy blogs.  Our goal is to try and help you by sifting through the best of the best blog posts (well at least the best posts in our mind) and getting you a short, concise list of our favorite 5-10 posts for the week.

We also like to post an adorable puppy picture for the week and here’s this weeks pic:

6 Blog Links You Should Not Miss!

  • 10 Interesting Facts About Dogs – One that I found very interesting was nose printing your dog…a dogs nose is like your fingerprints.  Another one that might be interesting to our Puppy In Training readers is that puppies have difficulty holding it during potty training until they are about 4 months old.  Check out the article for all 10 interesting facts about dogs.
  • Pet Obesity Chart – This infographic was actually brought to us by Pet 365, but I found it through my Blog Paws feed.  Since I have Labrador Retrievers I always keep an eye on their weight (Labs have a tendency to be obese due to their love of food).  Stetson was getting a bit chubby about a year ago so I cut back on his feeding and now he’s looking quite svelte.  Take a look at the chart to see a few stats on dog and cat obesity.
  • Should You Let Your Dog Sleep In Bed With You? – We let Stetson and Linus sleep in bed with us.  All of our Guide Dog Puppies In Training have to sleep in their crates.  However, are we allowing our dogs to many liberties by letting them sleep in our bed?  This article may answer that question for you.
  • Merry Christmas, Kids.  I Poisoned The Dogs – Don’t worry this one has a happy ending.  This article just goes to show you that we all make mistakes with our dogs.  In fact my guide dog puppy, Dublin got into a box of chocolate cookies last year.  We ran to the emergency vet and ended up inducing vomiting.  Lucky for us no permanent damage.  No matter how close you watch your pups you never know what may happen.
  • A Puppy For Christmas! Things To Consider – This is a must read article if your considering purchasing a puppy as a Christmas gift.  If you ask us then our answer would be “No, do not get a puppy as a Christmas Gift!”  unless you know the amount of time and responsibility a puppy requires (and the person receiving the puppy knows this too) the holidays are a difficult time to take on a new pet.  We wrote a very similar article on Christmas Puppy As A Gift a few years ago.  Go with the alternative and buy a picture of a puppy, a collar, or a leash and after everyone agrees go out and adopt a puppy at your nearby rescue or shelter.
  • 21 Things You Can’t Do With A Puppy In The House – This one is a good reminder that puppies are a large responsibility and even thought they are cute and adorable they will take up a large chunk of your day.  The one I always fear the most when getting a new puppy is #7 “Sleep More Than 3 Hours In A Row”.  I’ve been lucky my last two pups have slept most of the night, but if I have another Stetson (he only slept 2 hours in a row for the first 4 weeks) I might not make it.

That’s this weeks list of my favorite blog articles for the week.  I notice a Christmas theme in this past weeks readings.  I’m sure that trend will continue for the next couple weeks and perhaps a few new years articles?  Enjoy the articles and if you have an awe inspiring article you’d like me to read and possibly link back to in our roundup then leave us a comment with a link in our comment section below.

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 1-10

We made it! Time to find out which blog is the number one dog blog! That’s right today we reveal the top 10 dog blogs and in David Letterman fashion we start off with blog #10 concluding with our number 1 dog blog of the year.

We’ve been following some of our top ten dog blogs for 5 or more years and some of the others we discovered as recently as the past few months. They all have one thing in common and that is we absolutely love the content they are generating.

Just in case you haven’t seen our past top dog blog articles here’s an explanation of some of the stats we used to find our top dog blog:

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 1-10

In case you’re wondering about the weird numbers in the boxes below each blog screen shot here are some definitions:

  • Compete Unique Visitors – an estimate of how many visitors each site receives per month.
  • Alexa Rank – ranks sites by the number of visitors and pageviews they receive.
  • Google Page Rank – is largely based upon the numer and quality of backlinks to a webpage.
  • Facebook “Likes” – the number of people who “like” the blogs accompanying Facebook Fanpage.
  • Twitter Followers – the number of people following the blogs accompanying Twitter Account.
  • D.O.B. – the date or approximate date the domain name was registered.

Unfortunately, I don’t have super awesome programming skills so these numbers are just a snapshot at the time I put together this post, but it should give you a good approximation of the current numbers. We start off with our #10 dog blog and we look no further than one of our favorite celebrity dog trainers, Victoria Stillwell.

TOP DOG BLOG #10 – Victoria Stillwell’s Blog

Victoria Stillwell's Blog

4/10

What they have to say:“She is best known for her role as the star of Animal Planet’s hit TV series It’s Me or the Dog, through which she is able to share her insight and passion for positive reinforcement dog training by taming some of the world’s most unruly pets as she counsels families on their pet problems. She also served as a judge on CBS’s Greatest American Dog.”

What we have to say: If you asked a dog lover to name two famous dog trainers the first would probably be Cesar Millan and the second just might Victoria Stillwell from the hit tv show “It’s Me or the Dog.” We had to include at least one if not both of these two famous dog trainers on our top dog blog list, but unfortunately we couldn’t find a Cesar blog. However, Victoria had a wonderful blog that includes not only her own musings, but articles from other expert trainers as well.

TOP DOG BLOG #9 – Pawluxury

Pawluxury

293

4/10

489

What they have to say: “eco-living for the everyday dog – We offer eco-friendly, organic, natural dog products made in the USA.”

What we have to say: The Pawluxury blog is one of those blogs that I used to come to and read almost religiously. It’s actually a companion blog to their ecommerce site where they offer luxury, high-quality, durable, holistic and earth-friendly products for the everyday dog and their owners. I just wish they would get back to updating the blog. We highly recommend you sift throught some of their blog articles. However, you will not see them on this list again next year if we don’t start seeing some new blog posts soon. We are big fans of the environmentally friendly dog blogger and that is one of our favorite parts about pawluxury as well as another one of our favorites blog #30 Raise A Green Dog!

TOP DOG BLOG #8 – The Three Dog Blog

The Three Dog Blog

3/10

790

What they have to say: “This site is all about our lives with the dogs. It will be a realistic insight into the ups and downs of dog ownership and the joys and sorrows that go with it. Sometimes challenging, sometimes thought provoking but hopefully most often fun.”

What we have to say: Another one of our all time favorite blogs that has slowed quite a bit recently. Again we’d like to see more articles or the Three Dog Blog may also be in danger of falling off our top dog blog list. However, there many great articles if you sift through the content or you might just try searching their content by using the search box in the upper right corner. We have seen some recent changes to the blog design so perhaps we will see a flood of new content soon. We’re keeping our fingers crossed. One thing we really like…we finally caught up to the three dog blog with Stetson, Linus, and Dublin we are now also three dog bloggers!

TOP DOG BLOG #7 – Ask Spike Online

Ask Spike Online

2/10

17

What they have to say: “Hello! I am Spike, and I write Ask Spike Online. I want to help families understand their pet’s behavior, the psychology behind it, and what they can do to correct unacceptable behavior. This site is driven by your questionsand situations. I started writing in 2008, but I have been a dog my whole life, helping my mom communicate to other humans what dogs are thinking, both in-person and online. I base my suggestions on the knowledge I have attained through my experience and the experiences of others in my pack and how it relates to canine psychology.”

What we have to say: Another dog blog that’s been in my feed reader from what seems like the very beginning of time…well maybe since late 2008. A blog from the dogs point of view Spike helps us to better understand why dogs do what. I’m sure we can all use a little help with that. What’s our favorite part of the site? Puppies of course. Spike has a section in his navigation bar dedicated to puppies and if you are a winnie the pooh fan then clicking on the PUPPIES link in the navbar is a must!

TOP DOG BLOG #6 – Pet Connection Blog

Pet Connection

5/10

What they have to say: “The Pet Connection (follow us on Twitter at PetConnection) began as a pet-care column in The Sacramento Bee, starting in 1984 and written by Gina Spadafori. Her column later became syndicated, first through McClatchy, which joined with Scripps-Howard and then became McClatchy-Tribune. The Pet Connection had already left, as Spadafori signed with the world’s largest provider of syndicated content, Universal Press (now Universal Uclick), in 1995. Dr. Marty Becker became her business and writing parter in 2007. She launched this site as the PetConnection home in 2006.”

What we have to say: As you can see Pet Connection was around long before the blog. The Pet Connection blog is one of our favorites with several writers who are experts in their fields. One of our favorite parts about the Pet Connection Blog was their Dog Cars section (DogCars.com). This niche section later merged with the main Pet Connection blog. We still look back at the archives and wish that Pet Connection authors would revive this section of the blog. I guess with the slowing economy people are less likely to buy cars with dogs as one of their main considerations as seen by the demise of one of dogcars.com favorite dogcars the Honda Element. If you’re looking for the Dog Cars section go to the blog, check the sidebar, and find the dogcars.com category.

TOP DOG BLOG #5 – Daily Kibble

Daily Kibble

3/10

What they have to say: “We are a daily e-mail newsletter featuring the hottest, coolest, latest, and greatest everything for pets: things to do, things to buy, and services for our furry four-legged best friends. We only go where we are invited (i.e., opt-in subscriptions), but once welcomed in, we show up daily Monday through Friday (that’s once a week in dog years). Being purely editorial, we only feature stuff we love, hoping to bring you the best of the best, so you can be the first to know. As pet owners, we know that we are responsible for every bit of happiness our pets will ever experience in their lifetimes. That’s why we bring you Daily Kibble: not just to provide information, but also to enhance your enjoyment of, and connection to, your pet.”

What we have to say: These guys are a little different…the focus is on the daily newsletter rather than the blog. You can still look into the archives, but you need to subscribe to the email newsletter to get your updates (I couldn’t find an RSS feed). While this is a bit odd, we do enjoy receiving the short and sweet daily newsletter. It actually reminds me a little bit of my daily groupon email…simple, quick, and easy content to consume!

TOP DOG BLOG #4 – ThatMutt.com: A Dog Blog

That Mutt

4/10

752

What they have to say: “Ace is a 5-year-old black lab mix. Ace has a lot of talents like drinking an entire toilet bowl of water. He can also fling his drool six feet high onto our walls. He enjoys retrieving any object, ripping apart boxes, attacking the hose and beating me in dog-paddle races.”

What we have to say: Dog Runner, Pet Sitter, Dog Blogger…we’re getting close to the top and ThatMutt.com is #4! Many of Lindsay’s articles really hit home with me and my dogs. Her recent articles on separation anxiety have helped me with Linus and we love reading her and Ace’s unbiased doggy product reviews. The web design has recently changed and perhaps in a transitional stage as it’s very plain, but still easy to find the content. We can’t wait to read more and can see ThatMutt.com challenging for number 1 next year if Lindsay and Ace have the time to push their blog to the top!

TOP DOG BLOG #3 – The Labrador Brats Dog Blog

Lab Brats

3/10

489

858

What they have to say: “Dakota & Cheyenne are purebred Chocolate Labrador Retrievers and the inspiration behind 8 Paws Up Labrador Retriever Info & Gifts and DogWire Dog Gifts. They are full blood sisters, 9 months apart in age, and are being trained as Therapy Dogs to visit children in local hospitals.”

What we have to say: We love Labrador Retrievers! Stetson is a Black Lab…Dublin is a Yellow Lab…Derby was a Yellow Lab, and Linus is…maybe some Lab!? Anyhow we may be a little biased towards Labs, but that doesn’t change the fact that The Labrador Brats Dog Blog puts out great content. We’d like to see more frequent dog posts, but we love reading about Dakota and Cheyenne. The main site is a Labrador Lovers shop so if you love your Lab this is definitely the site to visit!

TOP DOG BLOG #2 – Dogasaur

Dogasaur

3/10

What they have to say: “Our aim is to help the dog owner attain the highest quality of life for their dog. We strive to connect dog experts with dog lovers. And every message is founded on our collective responsibility to support organizations and charities dedicated to helping dogs who cannot fend for themselves. Dogasaur wants our readers to become involved, and come back often enough to become part of the family.”

What we have to say: What feels different abotu this site and why is it #2 on our list? First of all we love the web design, second the community aspect really makes you feel they are embracing the social web 2.0 aspect of the internet, and finally their sheer number of Facebook fans really jumps out at your. Great articles on the blog and one thing I really love…The “Featured Adopt Me Dog” scattered throughout the blog archives…cool, cool, cool!!!

TOP DOG BLOG #1 – The Dog Files

The Dog Files

5/10

What they have to say: “After adopting an American Foxhound/Pointer mix named Max from a local shelter, Kenn Bell decided to combine his skills as a filmmaker with his immense love of all things canine to create the very best Dog Video Series and Website on the web. After christening it, Dog Files, and making Max the mascot (that’s him in the logo), he began to travel around the country documenting how involved dogs are in all our lives. From ice cream socials to rescue groups to military working dogs, Kenn’s hope with the Dog Files is to let the world know that dog’s deserve our love, care and respect.”

What we have to say: And our number 1 Dog Blog is…The Dog Files!!! It was a long and difficult road, but we after much debate between myself, Stetson, Linus, and Dublin we decided that The Dog Files deserved to be our number one blog. What do we love most about The Dog Files? The incredible dog videos! Althought we’d love to see some dog training videos what we’ve seen is pretty awesome and we know how difficult it can be to put together some simple videos as we’ve tried to do with our Puppy In Training TV series.. If that’s not enough the dog files website design is very nice and easy to navigate. Finally, they’ve definitely immersed themselves in social media with a huge following on both Facebook and Twitter. Congratulations and great job to The Dog Files!

Final Thoughts for Top Dog Blogs 1-10

It was very difficult to come up with this list as pretty much all the dog blogs listed from 1-50 deserved to be number 1 for one reason or another. We did our best to narrow our list by using the numbers, but in the end much of this list is subjective and follows my own likes and dislikes.

After re-reading my top 10 dog blog list one thing I noticed is my loyalty to the “small” dog blog even though some of these “small” blogs have stopped producing content on a regular basis I still included them in my top 10 list. I guess loyalty to some of my favorite dog blogs is one of my faults, but as a one man blogger myself I understand that it can be difficult to pump out daily content (sometimes it’s even difficult to stay on a weekly or monthly schedule). However, I’m hoping some of these blogs make a come back and start blogging on a regular basis again…maybe this series of top dog blogs will be a wake up call and inspire some of our favorites like the Three Dog Blog and Pawluxury to start posting more content in the future.

Congratulations once again to The Dog Files! We haven’t been following them as long as some of the others, but we love their great articles and videos, wonderful web design, and how they’ve really embraced social media.

If you have a dog blog or if you have put together your own top dog blog list please let us know about it in the comments section below.

Don’t forget to subscribe to one of our channels so you don’t miss any of our awesome upcoming content. I hope you enjoyed this series of articles and we’ll speak soon! Facebook, Twitter, RSS.

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 11-20

We’re in the home stretch for the count down to the number one dog blog on the internet. Today we feature top dog blogs number 11-20 with a nice grouping of both small, medium, and large dog blogs. We love some of the web designs in today’s blogs and we assume that some of these doggy blogs are very well funded with their very own custom design (and perhaps a team of people who work on their website) rather than the free or low cost templates many of us little guys use with our dog blogs. Anyhow, we like a nice web design, but we love great content and that’s how some of the smaller blogs rise to the top.

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 11-20

Lets get started with one of the bigger blogs to make the list at #20 with the Petside Blog!

TOP DOG BLOG #20 – Petside Blog

Petside Blog

6/10

What they have to say:“What is Petside? An easy-to-use, reliable resource for pet parents on health, behavior, lifestyle and trends. We highlight the joys and challenges of having pets by serving up current, topical content from around the pet care world. At its core, Petside is a cuddly place, run by fellow pet lovers, where you can learn how to best care for your best friend.”

What we have to say: Petside.com hasn’t been around for too long, but boy has it grown. I actually remember seeing the blog in it’s early stages and even in the beginning they had a cool design and content. A new feature we recently noticed on the Petside website is the four image’s front in center on the home page. It’s actually a cool little tool that allows you to search for breeds, check symptoms if your pet is sick, find pet friendly places to visit, and a place to add your puppy or kitten to their development timeline…very cool!

TOP DOG BLOG #19 – Blog Paws

Pet Health Care Gazette

4/10

What they have to say: “BlogPaws is an online community site for pet bloggers and brands. We are the go-to resource for bloggers and brands to partner on projects and campaigns, to be educated on social media, and to arrange face-to-face meetings.”

What we have to say: The BlogPaws.com blog is much different then most of the other blogs in our top dog blog series. It targets pet bloggers and brands and many of the articles throughout the blog are full of advice on how to increase your readership and marketing your blog versus information on your pet. However, it’s not only about internet marketing for pet bloggers there’s also information and pictures about dogs and pets. What did we like the most here? Well since we are pet bloggers we do like the idea of getting more readers. The one big thing we like here is the annual BlogPaws Conference where pet bloggers, pet enthusiasts, shelters, rescues and brands together for education, networking and creating worldwide change for pets in need. Pretty darn cool!

TOP DOG BLOG #18 – Pet Food Direct

Pet Food Direct

4/10

790

What they have to say: “Since our beginning in 1997, we have been a company dedicated to providing pet parents & owners convenient online access to the widest variety of pet supplies possible delivered conveniently to your door. We are a group of pet loving individuals that simply enjoy making our customers and thus their pets happy. Hopefully our ecommerce website helps you find what you need quickly and efficiently and thus you can spend more time with your beloved pets.”

What we have to say: So it’s a company that you can order pet supplies from on the web and they deliver to your doorstep…revolutionary back when they started in 1997, but evolutionary today. What’s the big deal? Well not only do they offer a cool store front, but the blog has tons of great information. We love the helpful tips and hints they have for dogs, cats, and other pets. One thing we like (and learned) from PetFoodDirect.com is the way they successfully integrate helpful links back to products that would be useful throughout their articles. Another thing we liked that we don’t see enough throughout the blogs we reviewed are dog training videos and any other kind of online video to enhance blog posts. We’re doing our best to utilize online video with our Puppy In Training TV and Dog Toys and Products reviews.

TOP DOG BLOG #17 – Whole Dog Journal

The Wholde Dog Journal

5/10

What they have to say: “The Whole Dog Journal is a monthly guide providing dog owners with well researched, in-depth articles about all aspects of dog care and training. Features unbiased test reports of dog food, treats, toys, and training ads.”

What we have to say: It’s kind of funny how I have similar topic blogs bunched together in this case we have dog blogs that are dog food related here at #17, #18, and #21. I was a little bit bummed out that I had to pay to access certain sections of the site the good news is the blog articles I was reading and found useful were free. I just wish they had a higher posting frequency because the articles are great reads. What initially stood out for me were the section headers and of course the section on Puppy Training and Nutrition which was of high interest to me…major points for a section specifically for that subject. However, much to my chagrin some articles are “subscriber only”…boooo.  Although we do see a place for paid content and may someday subscribe to the exclusive membership section. Overall we did enjoy all the free information and recommend you take a look too.

TOP DOG BLOG #16 – Petlvr Blog

PetLvr Blog

3/10

236

What they have to say: “PetLvr Community is just a place where Pet Lovers can come together and mingle .. what they do while they are here is up to them!”

What we have to say: What do we like about the PetLvr Community? Well it’s the first blog we’ve come across that is not just one blog, but a community of blogs. As far as we can tell they are using buddypress to allow anyone and everyone manage their own pet blogs giving a wide range of thoughts and opinions.

TOP DOG BLOG #15 – Dog Milk

Dog Milk

4/10

What they have to say: “Dog Milk is a website dedicated to modern dog design, inspired by Jaime Derringer’s love for her two modern pets, Lulu and Beans (right). She felt that there needed to be a place where modern dog lovers can discover new products and sniff out what’s beyond the chain pet stores. Whether an innovative pet feeder, cool dog tee, or modern dog bed, Dog Milk strives to bring you the most cutting edge and modern design for your very best friend.”

What we have to say: This is a place to see some cool new doggy products not just the run of the mill stuff you find at PetSmart.com. We love subscribing to the RSS feed to see what interesting new item will show up next. If you’re looking for something different for your dog then check out Dog Milk.

TOP DOG BLOG #14 – Fido Friendly

Fido Friendly

5/10

What they have to say: “We are a bi-monthly magazine dedicated to the travel and lifestyle of our canine best friends. This blog is an extension of who we are in print—lovers of all things dog and the roads they travel. Walk, ride, drive, fly, pedal, paddle, or use whatever mode of transportation suits your Fido-friendly fancy, but by all means stay tuned and Leave No Dog Behind.”

What we have to say: Another montsrous magazine blog. We love the design! However, it’s not just another pretty face as there is substance to that style. We thought the travel destinations section of the blog was pretty cool…Looking for a place to go with your furry friend then look no further then some of the travel reviews on Fido Friendly (btw, they also include some excellent pictures of these dog friendly destinations)!

TOP DOG BLOG #13 – Bloggy Doggies

n/a

What they have to say: “We are 4 dogs and our mom who loves us. We dogs decided mom needed our help in writing a blog about dogs. Who better than to help her than us! After all we are the authorities on all things doggie!”

What we have to say: We just noticed that the Bloggy Doggies site is in transition. However, don’t let the current plain design fool you there’s great content underneath the covers. We know the content is great when you keep coming back to the site and even though Bloggy Doggies is one of the smaller blogs on our list it gets some of the highest marks for content. Kudos to the gang for putting together some of our favorite blog articles!

TOP DOG BLOG #12 – Dogs Fun Time Guide

Dogs Fun Time Guide

4/10

What they have to say: “A fun Dog Blog filled with good news and fun stuff about puppies and big dogs. The information found here is provided by long-time dog owners who have a ton of experience raising dogs from puppyhood through the senior dog years.”

What we have to say: Another group contribution blog, but this one is not separated into different blogs like the PetLvr Community. We’ve been following for a long time and have found many useful dog an puppy training articles. What stands out here at Dog Times blog is the awesome content. Just like Doggy Bloggies we find ourselves back on the Dog Times blog to leave comments and enjoy their articles.

TOP DOG BLOG #11 – The Daily Puppy

The Daily Puppy

6/10

What they have to say: “Welcome to The Daily Puppy; your source for cute puppy pictures, videos, articles and supplies. Browse pictures of the puppy of the day, create a profile for you and your puppy and connect with other puppy parents”

What we have to say: I’ve been following the Daily Puppy for years and initially I was not going to include it on the top dog blog list because I thought it was only about the pictures. I was totally wrong! There are tons of cool things on The Daily Puppy website including great puppy training information in their blog archives. There were a couple things we thought were uber cool including the little calendar widget int the sidebar that had a small thumbnail of each pup of the day. The second thing that really stood out to us (besides the adorable pup pics) was the Puppy Showdown where it’s up to you to vote for the cutest puppy in a head to head battle

Final Thoughts for Top Dog Blogs 11-20

It’s been very difficult narrowing our list down to come up with the number 1 dog blog and this article shows some of our very favorite dog blogs that we’ve been reading for the past 5+ years. Of course as usual you can see that we have quite a variety from the cutest of puppy pictures to one man (or dog) blogs to the super mega humongous audienced blogs that even have printed magazines.

I hope you’re enjoying this series of top dog blogs. COMING SOON!!! The number 1 Dog Blog!!! Our next article will be TOP DOG BLOGS #1-10. Don’t forget to subscribe to one of our channels so you don’t miss the Number 1 Dog Blog. Facebook, Twitter, RSS.

In this post we pass the mid point of the top 50 dog blogs. That’s right! We’ll be featuring top dog blogs 21-30 today and just like the past twenty featured dog blogs it’s a mixture of ginormous multi-author blogs mixed in with some of our favorite smaller one doggie blogs. I’m not really sure how this happened, but as you continue through this list you’ll notice that there’s a wide variety of specialized blogs in top dog blogs 21-30.  Here’s a little preview before you scroll down:

  • Green Dog – Keep your dog environmentally friendly.
  • Pet AdoptionAdopt A Puppy.
  • Petworking – A Pet Networking blog.

  • Carolina Mountain Dog – About what else a Carolina mountain dog.

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 21-30

Lets get started with blog number 30…a blog that we’ve been following since it’s inception…

TOP DOG BLOG #30 – Raise A Green Dog

Raise A Green Dog

5/10

980

What they have to say: “Our site brings you tips, tricks, products, and other information on how you can help your dog go green. We’re just starting so keep on watch, there’s lots more to come!”

What we have to say: As we previously mentioned we’ve been subscribing to the Raise A Green Dog Blog since day 1. We here at PuppyInTraining.com try our best to be green dogs and puppies as well and the Raise A Green Dog Blog is one of the best resources for keeping you up to date on the latest and greatest information on keeping you and your pup environmentally friendly. One of our favorite parts of the blog are all the Squidoo Lens. By the way, in case you were wondering the Raise A Green Dog Blog actually started as a Squidoo Lens way back in September of 2007 and just in case you didn’t know a Squidoo Lens is a place where you can publish web pages about your favorite things.

TOP DOG BLOG #29 – PetFinder.com Blog

Petfinder

8/10

What they have to say: “Petfinder is an online, searchable database of animals who need homes. It is also a directory of more than 13,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Organizations maintain their own home pages and available-pet databases.”

What we have to say: We couldn’t find a “about” page strictly for the petfinder blog, but we can attest that there’s plenty of great information pumping out of their awesome blog. If you’ve been following us for a while then you know we found Linus, our Aussie Shepherd mix through the petfinder database and since then we’ve been going back to the site to not only look at adoptable pets, but to read the tips provided by the blog. Definitely our number one feature we love about PetFinder.com is the humongous searchable database and what they do for homeless dogs, cats, and other pets. Keep up the good work guys with your wonderful website and blog!

TOP DOG BLOG #28 – Dogster Blog

Dogster

5/10

What they have to say: “Our flagship sites, Dogster and Catster, are the most helpful online sources for all things dog and cat related because we offer knowledgeable and trustworthy expert points-of-view as well as a vast wealth of opinions, advice and wisdom from our large community dog and cat owners. .”

What we have to say: It was kind of interesting reading through the dogster about us page as it mentions them more as a media conglomerate and seems less personal. Anyhow, we love dogster and our dogs are all members. In fact we new about dogster well before we discovered the dogster blog as our pups were signed on to the social networking site. However, we’ve been following the blog for the last few years and have found valuable information in their articles. The one thing that makes them stand out is definitely the social networking portion of the site. During the height of Friendster, Dogster took advantage and now is host to millions of dog and puppy profiles.

TOP DOG BLOG #27 – Best Bully Sticks

Best Bully Sticks

4/10

What they have to say: “Mom and I have been sharing with pets and humans like you very valuable information on pet nutrition and natural holistic alternatives to conventional pet care for several years now.”

What we have to say: We’ve been following Shadrach and the Bark-N-Blog for many years now and enjoy reading about natural holistic alternatives. We do not always follow the same lifestyle, but we always want to hear about alternatives to normal commercial products. I was very sorry to hear that Shadrach had recently passed back in April. Rest In Peace Shadrach.

TOP DOG BLOG #26 – Way Cool Dogs

Way Cool Dogs

3/10

25

723

What they have to say: “Way Cool Dogs was originally started by myself, a great-grandmother in south-central Nebraska, telling of our experiences about taking care of dogs. Over time, we began to see issues that were important to dog lovers that needed more attention. Over the years, things that are common everyday practice to is were things we did not know earlier in our own lives. This is what we choose to write about.”

What we have to say: We definitely like what they have to say over at WayCoolDogs…”The majority of the dogs who have been turned out or into shelters are due to training issues, which is the owner’s fault — not of the dog.” Great point! Once again another great person doing great work to support homeless dogs. Tons of great content here including product reviews (something we always love to see) featured front and center. Although it actually takes two clicks to get to the reviews.

TOP DOG BLOG #25 – Doggies.com

Doggies.com

3/10

19

What they have to say: “Our Doggies Dog Blog is your online destination for everything dog and for dog lovers.”

What we have to say: Doggies.com is another one of those humongous websites with tons of information. The blog portion is handled by Beth and it each article I saw on the site also included a pretty great image (the written content was also very nice).. A big part of the doggies.com website and one thing we liked in particular is their section on dog breeds. There is a ton of information on an assortment of dog breeds and makes for a great resource if you’re trying to find the right dog for your lifestyle.

TOP DOG BLOG #24 – K9 Chronicles

k9 Chronicles

3/10

What they have to say: “We have a passion for dogs, and we want to share our knowledge. We fully explain each product and provide a complete list of all ingredients so you know exactly what you’re getting.”

What we have to say: The K9 Chronicles is a companion blog to the K9 Cuisine website which offers the highest quality dog supplies. So what about the blog? We like how their are six main sections: Rescue Me, Dog Food Dish, Vet Med, Pet Tips, Well Behaved Dog, Pet Travel, K9 Cuisine Blog, and CEO Blog. This sectioning off with most recent articles listed makes it easy to navigate and find information. We think that blogging in addition to your regular ecommerce site is a great way to drive traffic and K9 Chronicles does just that by creating great content!

TOP DOG BLOG #23 – Carolina Mountain Dog

Caroline Mountain Dog

374

2/10

1

What they have to say: “It celebrates the unique relationship of dogs and the mountains, offering news of interest and valuable information about what to do and where to go with dogs in Western North Carolina and the South Carolina Upstate. Carolina Mountain Dog strongly advocates for humane treatment of animals, animal rights, spay/neuter, and adoption of shelter animals.”

What we have to say: The Carolina Mountain Dog may perhaps be the smallest blog to make the top 50 list. However, it’s one of those sites that we always seem to be reading when we open our RSS reader. The blog design is a little bit dated and we wouldn’t mind seeing an new design. However, we love the simplicity of the blog and of course the great content and we don’t even live in or near the Carolina mountains!

TOP DOG BLOG #22 – Animal Shelter Tips Blog

Animal Shelter Tips

3/10

n/a

What they have to say: “Our human mom worked in marketing “in another life” as she describes it. She adores animals, so she did help a little, too. She told us she wants to help people help animals by using her past work experience to put together ideas on fundraising, finding grants, and more. ”

What we have to say: My mom (the cat lady)will like this one…it’s Animal Shelter Tips Blog run by the cats. I know what you’re thinking: “Isn’t this the top dog blogs?” Yes, but Animal Shelters, Rescues, dog adoption, and how to adopt a puppy are all near and dear to our heart. We support rescue and found some of the information here on Animal Shelter Tips Blog invaluable and something a little bit different that we can share with our readers. What do we like best about this blog? It’s focus on Animal Shelter Tips is a narrow niche, but we’re glad that the Foxy and Sam are putting in the effort.

TOP DOG BLOG #21 – Dog Food Advisor

Dog Food Advisor

4/10

233

What they have to say:“Maybe it’s just me, but with all the information out there about dog food, why is it so darned hard to figure out which one to buy? Shouldn’t choosing dog food be a whole lot easier? Confused About Choosing Dog Food I think so. That’s why I created the Dog Food Advisor… so you can get unbiased help in choosing good dog food.”

What we have to say: We found this site recently through our friends on Facebook. Like the name says there is tons of dog food advice. This is more of a resource then a blog I plan on visiting on a daily basis. However, it is good to see the ratings and reviews of just about every dog food brand out there. One of my favorite parts of this blog is something that is a part of every blog and that’s commenting. You don’t just get the authors opinion, but you also get the opinion of hundreds of other people who feed their dogs the dog food under review.

Final Thoughts for Top Dog Blogs 21-30

Our top dog blogs number 21 to 30 had a wide range of different blogs. I’m not too sure why it ended up this way, but it seems that numbers 21-30 were dog blogs with specializations. Whether your looking for green dog advice or information about your next brand of dog food top dog blogs number 21-30 for whatever reason is a great resource for the specialized doggy information. Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed this portion of the top dog blog series. There’s lots of great information here and as you can see I made it easy for you to find each blogs Facebook, Twitter, and website with a click of the button. We’re hading into the final stretch now so make sure you visit us again soon so you can see who’s #1. Tommorrow we will have top dog blogs 11-20 so don’t forget to connect with us through Twitter, Facebook, or our RSS Feed (all options are in the upper right hand corner of this blog!

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 31-40

Welcome back to our top 50 dog blogs series top dog blogs 31-40. We just wanted to quickly mention that some of our favorite blogs are small one person operations while others are large sites presumably with multiple writers, backed by large corporations, and even sites with print magazines in publication. Blogs 31-40 represent both the small one person and the large mega sites. So lets get started!

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 31-40

Lets get started with blog number 40 straight from Ottawa, Canada:

TOP DOG BLOG #40 – Ottawa Dog Blog

Ottawa Dog Blog

936

5/10

292

What they have to say: “Ottawa Dog Blog is a resource for people in Ottawa about everything to do with dogs. It features dogs in Ottawa as well as dog stores, parks, breeders, shelters, charity events and offers general information about training, behaviours, outstanding products and more.”

What we have to say: A lot of information on upcoming dog events in Ottawa. I wish there was a similar easy to follow source here in Southern California. Also, great pictures in the dog of the week sidebar including many dog profile posts. Altogether a great assortment of information on dogs and dog related things in Ottawa. Also, we love the recent design update.

TOP DOG BLOG #39 – Thoughts Fur Paws

Thoughts Fur Paws

5/10

341

What they have to say: “ThoughtsFurPaws.com is all about my experiences with anything and everything pets. Some people call me a fanatic – and I happen to believe there are lots of others like me out there. I call myself an “Animaniac,” like the old cartoon.”

What we have to say: Simple and easy to follow classic blog design. One of the great things I love about reading through different blogs are that we are not all from the same area. For instance Thoughts For Paws talks about how to keep your pet tornado-safe something we don’t think much about here in California. However, we can take some of these tips and apply them to earthquakes (fairly common in Southern California). Lots of great news and information here for your dog or pet.

TOP DOG BLOG #38 – Terrierman’s Daily Dose

Terrierman's Daily Dose

n/a

~1/1/2004

What they have to say: “Information on working terriers, dogs, natural history, hunting, and the environment, with occasional political commentary as I see fit.”

What we have to say: A simple blogger blog. This blog actually strays away from it’s main subject of Terriers quite often, but has some interesting off topic information. The main topic is terriers and it is a companion blog to the Terrierman website. Some interesting reads here.

TOP DOG BLOG #37 – Bark N’ Blog

Bark N Blog

What they have to say: “Mom and I have been sharing with pets and humans like you very valuable information on pet nutrition and natural holistic alternatives to conventional pet care for several years now.”

What we have to say: We’ve been following Shadrach and the Bark-N-Blog for many years now and enjoy reading about natural holistic alternatives. We do not always follow the same lifestyle, but we always want to hear about alternatives to normal commercial products. I was very sorry to hear that Shadrach had recently passed back in April. Rest In Peace Shadrach.

TOP DOG BLOG #36 – Paw Nation

Paw Nation

7/10

What they have to say: “Your Source for Pet Care, Animal News, Pet Product Reviews and Funny Animal Videos!”

What we have to say: This is another one of those mega pet websites. All kinds of information on all pets including our favorite…dogs and puppies. Part of AOL one of our favorite places to go on this site is the pet product reviews. We love doing our own dog product reviews and love reading what other people think about products. If you want to check out an all inclusive site about pets pawnation might be the place to go…or scroll down to our next top blog as we have a run of a few more mega blogs and some that have actual print magazines in circulation—>

TOP DOG BLOG #35 – Pets.ca

Pets.ca

5/10

n/a

987

What they have to say: “Pets.ca believes in the ethical treatment of pets. We are against abuse of any kind, and try to foster a better understanding of the relationships between humans and pets.”

What we have to say: I love this site as a resource for all things pets and also for what they say in their about statement “against abuse of and kind…” Another one of those super humongous mega pet websites with tons of great information on dogs and other pets. These guys are located in Canada and have over a half dozen contributors to the website. The blog doesn’t get updated to often and it’s difficult to tell how often other sections of the website are updated, but as mentioned earlier even without regular updates it’s a great resource.

TOP DOG BLOG #34 – Modern Dog

Modern Dog

6/10

What they have to say: “The lifestyle magazine for modern dogs & their companions. Modern Dog: giving you something to bark about! Cherished family member, best friend, pampered pooch, canine kid… Modern Dog magazine celebrates all the contemporary canines out there—regardless of pedigree. ”

What we have to say: I’ve seen Modern Dog Magazines on the racks at Barnes and Noble and Borders. So obviously they have a ginormous backing. This site has a half dozen separate blogs and once again tons of great information and a website/blog that can be used as a resource for dog owners. Nicely layed out design and I like their dog of the week in the upper right corner of the sidebar.

TOP DOG BLOG #33 – The Bark

The Bark

5/10

What they have to say: “Bark is the magazine of modern dog culture—it speaks to the serious dog enthusiast. Bark is the indispensable guide to life with dogs, showing readers how to live smartly and rewardingly with their canine companions.”

What we have to say: The last of the big 4 websites in this post. The BARk is another one of those magazines I’ve seen on the rack. Once again as suspected from a site with such financial backing, lots of great information in a nicely designed website. One thing I thought was pretty cool on this site is a section for guest posting. I like that idea for such a large magazine publication. I’ll have to look into their guest posting policies and see if I can’t get some of my articles published to the BARk.

TOP DOG BLOG #32 – Ark Animals

Ark Animals

3/10

527

695

What they have to say: “Ark Animals first appeared on the Internet in 1995 as a private website for me (Diana L Guerrero aka the Ark Lady). It grew with topics related to wild and domestic animal behavior and training, animals careers, and contributions related to conservation. Because of the traffic had to be moved to its own domain in 1997.”

What we have to say: I’ve been following the Ark Animals website for a while now…not all the way back to 1995, but for about the last 3 or 4 years and it has gone through many transitions. The site has tons of information, but that information is a little more difficult to find compared to the previous 4 sites on the list. I can see the same thing happening with my own site and need to figure out a better way to organize blog content. Once again just like my blog the Ark Animals blog postings can sometimes be a bit erratic. However, if you have the chance to dig into the content you’ll find some great information. One of our favorite sections is the area on animal careers which is great for animal lovers who are looking for a job with animals.

TOP DOG BLOG #31 – Woof Report

Woof Report

6/10

866

What they have to say:“Woof Report was created in 2008 as a daily email newsletter delivering handpicked dog care tips, news, products and more. Near the end of 2009, after sending hundreds of daily tips and gaining a loyal (and much appreciated) following, and stretching our budget to the limit — the daily emails came to an end, and the Woof Report team went their separate ways. As the Woof Report founder, I couldn’t leave my beloved ‘pet project’ behind. I continued to find useful dog care and training tips, practical dog products, interesting dog news, and ideas for having fun with my own dog – things that I just had to share….so as of October 2010, Woof Report is back!”

What we have to say: Tons of tips on dog training, products, news, and much more. It’s a smaller site that from what I read in the about section run by only one person, but keeps a regular posting schedule. There are several interesting sections on this blog including a forum which is unfortunately not very active. However, one section we do appreciate is the Lend a Paw section which covers tips on helping shelter pets…Linus appreciates the help…Thanks Guys!

Final Thoughts for Top Dog Blogs 31-40

Top Dog Blogs Numbers 31-40 are now in the books. We had another interesting mix with a run of super mega blogs squished in with some great single person operated blogs. In case you hadn’t notice I usually give a few extra points to the single person operated blogs because I personally know how difficult it can be to keep your blog running.

I’d like to point out that one of our favorite blogs: the Bark N Blog has a small number of Compete Unique Visitors at 509 while only 1 spot ahead is the AOL backed PawNation with 431,433 Compete Unique Visitors. It just goes to show you that in our Top Dog Blog Series it doesn’t matter how many visitors you receive daily…just keep pumping out great content to your blog and I’m sure we’ll see you on the Top Dog Blog list in 2012

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 41-50

If you’ve been following us the past few months then you already know that we’ve been monitoring a list of nearly 500 dog blogs across the internet!

Welcome to Puppy In Training’s Top 50 Dog Blog List number 41-50.

In the past we’ve entered the Puppy In Training blog into top dog blog competitions where we send our readers to vote for our blog. Other times we’ve just found our names on top dog blog lists. Our top dog blog list is composed of first a statistical analysis along with our own subjective analysis of each and every one of the 500+ dog blogs that started on our list.

Our top 50 list is not all about statistics and it’s not just our  opinion, but rather a combination of the two. We rated each blog based on several statistical and subjective categories including content quantity and quality, design, Compete Rank, Alexa Rank, Google Page Rank, Facebook “Likes”, Twitter Followers, YouTube Subscribers, and Date of Birth.

Where did we find all of these blogs? We searched high and low through some of the largest directories including Yahoo, DMOZ, Technorati, BlogLog, and Blog Catalog. We also did Google searches, examined Blog Rolls on other dog blogs, and found many existing top dog blog lists throughout the net. Finally we announced here on the Puppy In Training Blog, our Facebook Page, and our Twitter account that we were compiling a list of top dog blogs and asked all of our subscribers to submit their blog and blogs they enjoy reading.

Top 50 Dog Blogs – 41-50

So lets get this party started with:

TOP DOG BLOG #50 – Dog Reflections

dog reflections

4/10

n/a

n/a

What they have to say: “The Dog Guide is intended to provide concise but highly relevant information to common folks looking for a family dog.”

What we have to say: A simple blog design that is easy to follow. The blog is only a small part of the website as a whole with some great information found outside the blog including dog breeds, puppies, dog training, health, and dog pictures. We’re not too fond of most of the recent blog posts which are just doggy videos found on YouTube. However, one of the things we really like are the quality of some of the most popular posts in the right sidebar is what propelled this blog into spot number 50 of the top dog blogs. We will continue to monitor this blog and if they continue to just simply embed YouTube videos it will definitely fall out of our top 50 dog blogs.

TOP DOG BLOG #49 – For The Love Of The Dog Blog

for the love of the dog blog

4/10

n/a

n/a

What they have to say: “Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it’s my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

What we have to say: Recently at this blog the post frequency is much lower than we’d like to see at our favorite dog blogs. However, once again it’s content from the past that pulls this dog blog into our top 50 list. Most of the recent content is serious including information on Patrick the abandoned dog and dog abusers. One thing that we really liked on this blog is some of the great information found in the left sidebar from info on adopting pets to animal welfare to rescue’s and shelters…there’s tons of great stuff to be found in the sidebar.  If we don’t see more content in the future this blog also runs the risk of falling our of our top 50 doggy blogs.

TOP DOG BLOG #48 – Pet MD

PetMD

5/10

982

What they have to say: “PetMD is the largest global source of pet health information in the world today. Part of a global network of veterinary professionals, PetMD’s content was created by veterinarians for consumers and veterinarians.”

What we have to say: We love the design and content of this website. PetMD has tons of information and hosts four blogs: Fully Vetted, The Daily Vet, Purely Puppy, and Healthy Assurance. PetMD is a great resource for people looking for information on the health of their pets. I plan on following the Purely Puppy blog very closely and I’m guessing PetMD.com will most likely be higher on my list come this time next year.  There’s definitely a lot to see here, but two things I’d like to point out are first there’s a cool pool that I love answering in the sidebar and second who can resist the cutest puppy gallery!

TOP DOG BLOG #47 – Dog Time

DogTime

5/10

What they have to say: “With DogTime, our mission is to keep dogs out of shelters and in good homes by equipping novice and experienced owners alike with all the information needed to make them, and their dogs, very happy.

What we have to say: Back to back mega-sites! DogTime.com is another site with tons of information and great design. The site has plenty of content and it’s easy to find with well thought out navigation. Another bonus is we love the mission statement for DogTime…it’s very similar to what we try to do here on the Puppy In Training Blog.  One interesting thing we found on this blog is a search feature based on dog breed.  Basically you can search for all blog articles about a specific breed…that goes to show you how much content they must have on this blog.

TOP DOG BLOG #46 – Dog Tipper

Dog Tipper

4/10

What they have to say: “DogTipper.com spans over 3,000 pages, covering dog tips, pet product reviews, dog news, celebrity canines, Dog of the Day, dog-centric festivals, dog travel, and more. We conduct weekly giveaways of interest to pet lovers. DogTipper has a special emphasis on pet adoption as well as ways to save money on pet care.”

What we have to say: DogTipper.com has a lot of content coming at you every day. Unfortunately, for us it can be a little bit overwhelming. The design is not as neat and organized as DogTime.com or PetMD.com, but we like the more personal feel you get at DogTipper.com.  We haven’t joined yet, but one special thing we like on this blog is the pet directory…actually we’ve been working to get a directory of our own setup on the PuppyInTraining.com website.  As soon as we finish up with this blog series we plan on joining the DogTipper Pet Directory.

TOP DOG BLOG #45 – Pawcurious

Pawcurious

4/10

What they have to say: “You may find if you spend some time here that this is not a particularly technical blog. That is by design. I leave that to the other pros who do it well and do it regularly. This is a place for people who love pets to talk about life, and if I get a strange urging to veer off into a discussion of vaccine protocols or elephants in Tanzania, so be it. We play fast and loose around here.”

What we have to say: Things are a bit different at the Pawcurious blog. The feeling here is very personal and as Dr. V mentions it’s meant not to be a technical blog. We love the original design and classic blog look and feel. Overall quite different from most of the blogs we read on dog training, product reviews, and upcoming events, but nice to see something a little different.  Along with interesting content the blog design definitely stands out (in a very good way) among all the blogs we reviewed.

TOP DOG BLOG #44 – The Poodle and Dog Blog

The Poodle And Dog Blog

What they have to say: “This blog is to celebrate the remarkable, the ordinary, and the very funny dogs that share our world.”

What we have to say: The design of this blog is very plain and looks like just one of the typepad default templates. In fact, the Poodle and Dog Blog is actually hosted on Typepad and is one of the few blogs to make this list that does not have it’s own domain name. However, it’s the content that we care most about and what we really enjoy about this site. A broad spectrum of articles from doggy news and we’ve even come across several articles about our favorite: guide and service dogs.  Along with all the great content there’s a plethora of helpful links in the right sidebar…we actually looked at them all to help build our top 50 dog blogs list.

TOP DOG BLOG #43 – The Days of Johann an Agility Dog

The Days of Johann An Agility Dog

798

4/10

783

What they have to say: “It all started in 2004 after my Mum adopted me. She decided to create a fun site about me and to share all the cool things I did with our buds. Mum wanted to purchase the best, safest, most fun, durable and cool dog products for me that she could find. But she had a hard time finding those type of products. That’s when JohannTheDog.com began. Now my site is one of the largest and most popular online dog product portals on the Internet!”

What we have to say: One of the first dog blogs I started following way back in the early days of Linus, my first pup. It’s not a blog just about agility as Johann shares his life adventures. Johann has created quite a few Squidoo lenses to help share what he’s learned as well as dog product reviews, agility updates, pictures, and videos. It appears that Johann uses a standard blogger template and there’s a ton of informatation running down the sidebar. We’d prefer a cleaner look, but overall the information is all there and easy to find you just need to be ready to scroll down a bit.  One final thing we like that others may not is the recommended doggy products in the main content and along the sidebar.

TOP DOG BLOG #42 – Pet Sit USA

Pet Sit USA

4/10

What they have to say: “We founded PetsitUSA with this in mind; for pet guardians and the welfare of their companions. We wanted to create an easy way for people throughout the country to locate professionals who are able provide special, loving, care for their best friends.”

What we have to say: Yep! It’s mainly a pet sitting website, but the blog offers more than just pet sitting tips. There’s tons of great information including dog health tips, dog product reviews, dog news, and much, much more. We also love the great custom design of the PetSitUSA Website and blog. It’s very easy to navigate and one of the things we love is if you are looking for a pet sitter there’s a searchable database you can find on the home page.  We’ve done a lot with dogs and puppies and one thing we may consider down the line is becoming pet sitters so we have definitely bookmarked this site just in case the time comes for us to become members of petsitusa.

TOP DOG BLOG #41 – OhMiDog!

OhMiDog

6/10

241

361

What they have to say: ohmidog! – a website that covers dog-related news and happenings in Baltimore and around the world. In the narrowest sense, this website is about the mutt — the kind of dog that has no pedigree and will win no beauty contest; the kind of dog that, more often than its purebred counterparts, ends up abandoned, neglected or in shelters; the dog that, while it doesn’t fit under neat “breed” labels, is clearly one of a kind.

What we have to say: Lots of dog and pet news, but a little thin when it comes to some of our favorites including product reviews, dog training, and upcoming events. We love some of the articles and stumbled across some great pictures here.  We also really appreciate (especially Linus) the fact that he likes to talk about the mutt and shelter dogs…very close to Linus’s heart :)

Final Thoughts for Top Dog Blogs 41-50

That does it for Top Dog Blogs 41-50. Some big players were there to start off our Top 50 list including mega-sites PetMD.com and Dog Time. We also highlighted a few smaller, more personal blogs including The Days of Johann an Agility Dog and Thoughts Fur Paws. You might wonder why the mega-sites are ranked lower then one might expect. There are two reasons:

  1. These sites are more like websites with a blog attached.
  2. We’re giving more points to the more personal blogs written by one or two people (more like what we do at the Puppy In Training Blog) rather than the mega-sites pumping out 5+ articles a day with multiple authors.

Don’t forget to visit the blog tomorrow for the Top 50 Dog Blogs – 31-40! If you want it automatically delivered to your email box then join our email subscription list or if you’re more technically advanced subscribe to our RSS Feed.

Thanks for joining us and we’ll see you tomorrow!

And The Top Dog Blog is…

My search for the Top Dog Blog started a couple months ago when I decided to clean up my RSS feed and email subscriptions and look for fresh new dog training content out on the web.  My goal was simple: Find “MY” top 50 dog blogs and add them to my RSS news feed so I could see the latest and greatest dog and puppy articles across the net.

I searched high and low sifting through major search engines, directories, and other dog blog top xx lists and I came up with over 500 dog blogs and websites.  After filtering the list of duplicates, scrapers, and other unworthy sites I came up with my final list of 486 dog blogs.  I left the purely personal blogs to the side and included mainly sites about dog and puppy training, products, events, rescues, adoptions, and pictures.  By the way, I’m creating a separate list of assistance, service, and guide dog blogs so if you’d like to be added to that list send me a message through our contact form.

Top 50 Dog Blogs

Not only did we compile this monstrous list, but we also looked at each and every blog in hopes of coming up with our top 50 dog blog list.   Subscribe to our RSS feed or Email subscription so you don’t miss our upcoming series on the top 50 dog blogs across the internet.

If you own a dog blog and you are not on this years list then please leave me a comment below and we’ll make sure we add you to next years top dog blog list.

Do You Have A Dog Blog?

Last year we were excited to see our dog blog reach number one on Technorati for top Pet Blog.  However, since then we’ve noticed our site has declined steadily (as of this writing we rank 49th) on the Technorati list and we wondered how this could be since we still do our best to deliver great content.  We noticed that several spammy-looking sites and even totally unrelated blogs showed up on the Technorati top pet sites. On the other hand some of our favorite blogs were getting poor rankings.  This led us to believe that Technorati was not the best source to find the top dog blogs on the internet.

Yellow Lab Blogging

After this revelation we decided to check some of the other blog directories, search engines, and top lists across the internet in search of the top dog blog.  We checked out MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, Yahoo Directory, DMOZ Directory, Google Search, Yahoo Search, Bing Search, Blog Top Sites, Delicious, Invesp.com, and as we mentioned Technorati.  After much effort we came to the conclusion that there wasn’t a good, current source for top dog blogs on the internet.

The Best Dog Blog

We’ve been running the Puppy In Training Blog for the past four years and during that time we’ve always had our eye out for other dog blogs and websites with great content.  Every year we re-evaluate our RSS feed and try to add new blogs we’ve come across and remove the old one’s that have shut down or gone stale.

This year we decided we’d like to ask you, our loyal readers to tell us about the dog blogs you write for or follow every day.  Our goal is to gather a list of as many dog blogs, rank them based on statistics (PR, Alexa, etc.), personal evaluation, and finally come up with a list of the top dog blogs across the internet!

So now what?  Tell us about your dog blog or the one’s you love to read in the comment section below or send us your information to our contact form.  We need to get your information by the end of this month, April 30th 2011 if you’d like to be included in this little competition.  We will publish the top blogs in a series of blog posts throughout the month of May 2011.

This a great opportunity to get exposure for your blog as last month alone we received over 65,000 page views according to Google Analytics.  We will also update our RSS feed with our top dog blogs list and we often times tweet, post to facebook, and link to other blog articles we read in our RSS feed.

What are you waiting for?  Tell us about your dog blog or your favorite doggy blog!
