The 6 Best Dog Costumes On The Internet

by Colby on February 8, 2008

I know what you’re thinking…The Best Dog Costumes? In the middle of February? It’s not even close to Halloween! This is true, but I’ve been hording several dog costume images over the past couple years that I’ve been itching to get up on this site. If you’ve been reading my blog then you saw that Stetson was a Bumble Bee for Halloween. I also wore my Bumble Bee outfit on Halloween making us a swarm of bees. While I must admit, Stetson was an adorable bumble bee it pales in comparison to the originality of these costumes.

So here we are with the 6 Best Dog Costumes circulating on the internet. You can click on the pictures for a larger image (some are already at maximum resolution).

Number 6 – Spider Pug

Spider Pug

Spider Pug…Spider Pug…Does whatever a Spider Pug can do…Have you seen the The Simpsons Movie yet? For some reason I’m drawn to Spider Pug. I know…it’s not too original…and you might say “I’ve seen better”, but for some reason the right color coupled with perfect length spider legs makes me love this costume.

Number 5 – The Golden Lion

The Golden Lion

He could be Azlan from The Chronicles of Narnia…or he could be the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. If you take a closer look he is part of our guide dogs of america group. You can see one of our guide dog puppy jackets on the left side of the picture. Bonus points for being a guide dog in training.  Inspired by this costume we took a shot at building our own lion mane dog costume for Derby.

Number 4 – Mini Knight And His Loyal Steed

Mini Knight And His Loyal Steed

This little guy reminds me of King Arthur, Excalibur, and the knights of the round table. I wish I could get my father’s cairn terrier into a similar costume, but unfortunately I don’t think the knight would survive the day.

Number 3 – Fluffy The Three-Headed Dog

Fluffy the Three-Headed Dog

If you’ve seen or read the first Harry Potter Book then you know all about Fluffy the Three-Headed Dog. Or maybe you’ve seen the Harry Potter Movies. Anyways, I’m sure the little boy in the picture got plenty of attention with his three-headed dog.

Number 2 – The Dog Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

The Dog Legend of Sleepy Hollow

How can this one be number 2. What a brilliant costume! It should be number 1. The Headless Horseman rides again…brings back memories of the recent Tim Burton movie The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp as the odd Ichabod Crane and Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman.  The headless horseman dog costume is definitely one of our favorites and I even see they have the costume listed on Amazon.com for purchase (however, not nearly as cool as the one in hits picture).

Number 1 – Snoopy! Watch Out For The Gator!

Dog Eaten By A Gator

I don’t really know if his name is Snoopy, but he is a Beagle. Why did I choose this one as the number 1 dog costume? It’s original, it’s humorous, it’s great!!! and it makes me laugh…An adorable Beagle getting eaten by an alligator.  This alligator dog costume would have gone great with Derby’s lion costume.  They do have some Alligator Infant/Toddler Costume
listed on Amazon, but I bet you could use your imagination and somehow make a similar dog alligator costume.

I hope you enjoyed the list. If you have any great dog costume photos please send them to me and I’ll try to post them on my next “Top List“. What do you think? Are these great costumes? Have you seen better?

I am a Johnny Depp fan, so definitely Sleepy Hollow for me!

They’re all really adorable though.

Wow! This is an eye opener to me.

I love the Golden Lion costume. :)

I’m glad everybody likes the Golden Lion costume. I went searching back and found the GDA Puppy Raiser site this image came from and he’s actually dressed as “Lambert the Sheepish Lion” and according to the blog “he even had his own theme music” Here’s the link:

There’s also a great costume of Elke the Fighter Jet.

haha, oh man, they even included little hooves on the headless horseman one. That is so brilliant.
All I know is that if I tried to dress up my dogs they would probably just sulk and sit on the floor in humiliation or try to wiggle out of their costumes.

Wow, people that dress their dogs in costumes deserve to get mauled by them

@Jake, At Guide Dogs of America they encourage you to dress up your dogs. The main reason being that they want you to handle your dogs paws, ears, claws, face…etc. so the dog won’t be shy or timid when their blind owner reaches for them or grooms them. Dressing up your dog is a good way to teach your dog to be tolerant when getting handled in different ways.

I wonder how much poo that crocodile costumer is rated for.

All of the costumes were adorable, as were, of course, the dogs. I liked the spider one, also, because it is very much in proportion with the dog.

Seeing that a beagle (finally!) won the Westminster Dog Show…the #1 choice has to be the beagle eating alligator.

Have fun!

Colby February 18, 2008 at 11:52 pm

@June, yes it’s fitting that the beagle being eaten by an alligator is the number 1 dog costume. Congratulations to Uno for being the first beagle to win best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club

I have never understood why people find it amusing to dress man’s best friend in humiliating costumes. In 50 years time we undoubtedly see an end to this horrific practice in the same way that bear baiting and dog-fighting has been banned in the civilised world.

As a dog lover I find picture No.5 particularly distressing. A working dog, a guide dog, has been made to wear what looks like an incredibly warm scarf – for the amusement of his owner. The dogs open mouthed expression appears to indicate he/she is panting and therefore distressed by the actions of the owner. The dog should be immediately removed from the owner for its own well-being.

Shame on you for publishing such disturbing and cruel pictures – but the real blame lies with the thoughtless owners, enjoying a joke at their pets expense. I would love to know what country indulges in such a sad and pathetic practice.

Of the five dogs we have lived with Spaniel x Labrador, Border Collie, Corgi, Labrador and Jack Russel none has needed to be dressed as an idiot to express their wonderful and entertaining personalities. I think that these owners need to pay more attention to their pets and try walking down the street dressed in the way they would dress their dogs.

The 3-headed dog, the dog being eaten alive by an alligator, and the spider pug made me laugh especially hard! I don’t necessarily think that these dogs’ owners are cruel…..but loserish with too much time on their hands? Definitely. Obviously, these people are in need of a hobby.

Oh, come on people! It’s just for fun! The dogs aren’t being harmed and it makes people laugh. Lighten up! It seems like some of you could use a little levity in your lives.

Obviously everyone has their opinions, but I have a very short-haired dog who would chill through in very little time if I put her out in winter without a coat. I honestly believe that she doesn’t judge her winter clothes by how silly they look nearly so much as by how long she can stay out without getting cold.

And for the excessive costumes such as extra heads and alligators weighing them down; do you think those dogs would rather be walking with their pet people in a parade or show? Or do you think they’d prefer being ignored in the back yard day after day. Ok, it’s silly, but these are people who obviously spend time with their dogs.

As for the costumes – I, too, liked the SpiderPug and the 3-headed Fluffy dog. And you notice, Fluffy’s person IS in costume as someone suggested.

@Helen, Great Point. That’s true that people who enjoy dressing their dogs in silly costumes obviously enjoy taking their pets out and spending time with them rather then leaving them home alone in the backyard all day.

I was watching Disney’s the Fox and the Hound the other day and as a bonus on the DVD they have Lambert the Sheepish Lion cartoon (Number 5 The Golden Lion).

I love the headless horseman costume. We have a Great Dane and would love that costume. Did someone make that or was it bought? Please let me know where you bought or we are willing to pay someone to make it for us (I’m not a very crafty person). I appreciate any help!

@April, a Great Dane would look great in that costume. Unfortunately, I do not know the person who designed the headless horseman costume.

My guess is that it was probably hand crafted as I’ve not seen any costumes like it at the costume store online or offline.

If I hear any information on who created the costume I’ll be sure and let you know.

The alligator costume is THE BEST COSTUME EVER!!! What an incredible post. Can you tell me where you found the alligator costume? I’ve been looking for an original/fresh costume idea for weeks now and THAT is by far the cooooooolest!

And for the haters GET A LIFE. Halloween is about fun and some of us like to include our pets in that fun!

Thanks for a fabu blog!

@stepher, I’m a big fan of the alligator costume as well. Unfortunately, I don’t know who designed the alligator costume. If I hear anything about the designer I’ll be sure to let you know.

By the way, if you do design an original costume I’d love to see pictures and possibly post the pictures to my blog.

Have a Great Halloween!

That better be a fake alligator that has that doggy in his mouth. I do not tolerate animal abuse, EVER!!!! Leave the puppies alone please.

Reply

Amy September 1, 2010 at 11:05 am

Seriously? You can’t tell just by the photo that the alligator is fake?

I don’t understand the haters toward these costumes. There are, as in all things, idiots who don’t take into consideration the things that can hurt their dogs. Don’t take on the whole of dog owners who like to include their dogs in their holiday traditions by looking at the idiots.

Some of these costumes were adorable. Some were odd. ::shrug:: I dressed as a dead soldier in honor of my dad one Halloween. My siblings and parents also dressed up along the same theme. The pets did too. There’s nothing wrong with supervised pet fun.

Go play with your dog and lighten up a bit.

You know I was going to write an article similar to this one, but I don’t think I could come up with five better costumes then the ones shown here. In terms of creativity these definitely take the cake. My favorite is the dog night-of-the round-table number, that’s just ridiculous-ly funny.
Anyway, if your looking to gather info on dog costumes, or trying to come up with somedog costume ideas take a look at my website. Thanks

lol @hairstyle (:
oawhhhh ccute dogs. dressing them up is fine as long as its not too uncomfortable for a long time. like, they all look pretty light, apart from the knight one, lol, but i doubt they kept that on for long. the headless horseman was awesome! a bridal and reins for a dog :)

For those complaining about dressing up pets (MARK), get a grip. If you really want to do something, head to the pound and donate your time to the animals that have really been abused. Perhaps you can donate as well and help find a loving lifetime home. Now that’s a good way to spend that misdirected energy!

Let’s have a fun Halloween with our best friends!

Wow, I can’t believe some people are really worked up about the animals being dressed up in costume. For the one person that asked how the owners would like it if they were dressed up in those costumes and forced to parade around…um…it’s halloween. Most people were willingly dressed up in costumes parading around. That’s what people do on halloween. That comment didn’t make any sense except to show that some people can be excessively over sensative. I think the dogs at most might have felt confused….but I doubt they were “humiliated”. Especially when they felt the happy energy being emitted and expressed by their owners and people around them having so much fun.
