Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Review Part II

A couple weeks ago we reviewed the first disc from Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD set. If you missed the review take a look at it now by clicking this link: Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Review Part II. The first disc covered “People Training For Dogs” and it discussed several great topics on how to better understand and train your dog by getting to know dog psychology.

Disc 2 covers Becoming A Pack Leader and is very similar to an episode of the Dog Whisperer. This disc covers Cesar’s main points on how to become a pack leader and uses three case studies to illustrate his points. I haven’t seen every episode of the Dog Whisperer, but the three case studies may very well be from the Dog Whisperer TV show.

Here’s a summary and short review of Disc 2 of Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD set.

Becoming A Pack Leader

As I mentioned earlier Disc 2 is based on three case studies very similar to an episode of the Dog Whisperer.  I went ahead and took some notes and listed main points I got from each case study.

Case #1 Harley the German Shepherd -He runs the house. He gives no respect.

  • You don’t want to keep tension on the leash
  • There’s no leadership in Harley’s house.
  • When Cesar first enters a house with a troubled dog he doesn’t make eye contact.
  • If your dog is out in front he is the leader. If he’s by your side or behind you then he’s the follower.
  • Calm assertive energy controls in a wild pack of dogs.
  • Keep your dog on a short, relaxed leash. Tension in the leash = aggression.
  • Dog’s as followers will never run away from the leader in a pack of wild dogs.
  • Cesar dominates Harley in his territory. Psychological challenge. With a powerful breed like a German Shepherd it’s always recommended that you seek professional help. Ears back, head down is a sign of submission.
  • A slumped over body displays weak energy to the dog. Walk with your head held high and your shoulders back like you own the place.

In a pack of wild dogs the leader will enforce many rules…when they travel, when they hunt, when they eat, and when they rest. If your not the one setting the rules then your dog is setting the rules for you.

Case #2 Sadie The Wheaton Terrier – she has no rules, boundaries, or limitations.

  • Animals know that your an authority figure by how you behave.
  • Dogs won’t jump up if they perceive you as an authority figure.
  • This dog has no rules, boundaries, or limitations and that’s why she tends to run away.
  • Create a consequence for misbehaving. The dominant one should address himself to the follower. Cesar keeps the dog in a specific state until he released her from that state.
  • The boundaries need to be set by the pack leader.
  • When you say “Sadie No!” “Sadie Stop” (in an excited manner) that only creates excitement in the brain. A softer voice creates more relaxation. A loud voice creates more excitement.
  • Sadie is an Active Submissive type and born to be a follower that’s why she picks up on Cesar’s teachings so quickly. Cesar needs to make her Calm Submissive state.

Case #3 Dixie The Jack Russell Terrier – impossible to control on the walks. She has no leadership on the leash.

  • Dogs need, rules, boundaries and limitations both at home and on walks.
  • Don’t pickup a dog when he’s under stress that will only intensify or nurture that behavior. Don’t give affection to the dog when the dog is in an aggressive state. This just reinforces to the dog that what they are doing is correct.
  • The Ilusion Collar helps to keep the collar high on the neck. The softest part of the neck and the proper place for applying corrections. This makes it much easier to redirect the mind of the dog. This is very similar to how a mother dog controls her puppies by the neck.
  • Cesar gives Dixie corrections just as she starts to react before her behavior can escalate into something much worse. You have to be very alert when walking your dog.
  • Cesar uses several correction techniques: A leash correction and a slight tap on the side of the body…it’s not a kick…just enough to redirect the mind. One final correction he uses is the bite. His hand is the mouth and his fingertips are the teeth just as a mother dog would correct her puppies with her mouth.
  • Psychological Activities: Make Dixie sit facing away from the barking dogs. As soon as you see unwanted behavior you have to give a correction.
  • Dixie’s owner has a very passive energy which allows Dixie to take control of the situation.

Natural behavior of a dog is to be a hunter, but we don’t want hunters in the city we want a domestic type dog.

Use your energy to create a calm submissive state. Any tool that creates fear, tension, nervousness is a terrible tool. The energy you express can be the worse tool you use. The animal in her recognizes your energy. Make sure you use calm and assertive energy.

Four Levels of Dog Energy:

  1. Low – Usually want to be followers
  2. Medium – Usually want to be followers
  3. High – Usually want to be leaders
  4. Very High – Usually want to be leaders

When you get a dog you should look for one with the same or less energy then you. A dog with more energy will try to dominate you and become your pack leader. When choosing a dog it’s more important to choose the correct energy level rather than the correct breed.

Only give affectinon to your dog at the right time. Know when and how to give affection to a dog.

Typical for a dog to lower his head when a pack leader comes toward them. Give body, mind, then affection. You can give emotional affection when the body is in balance, but not when it’s out of balance. Most people share affection when the mind is unbalance which is the wrong thing to do it tells the dog that that behavior is acceptable.

Here’s what Cesar hopes you get out of this DVD on Becoming A Pack Leader:

  • Be the pack leader everyday
  • A pack leader sets rules, boundaries and limitations.
  • A pack leader projects Calm and Assertive ENERGY to the pack.
  • A pack leader walks in front.
  • A pack leader walks with the pack everyday.
  • Cesar recommends a 45 minute walk in the morning and feed the dog after the walk not before.

My Thoughts

Another great disc from the Mastering Leadership DVD set.  The three case studies from disc 2 represent three of the most common problems between dogs and dog owners.

The first dog, Harley should remind owners to choose dogs that match their personality.  As Cesar mention it’s not necessarily a specific breed, but an energy level.   If you are a low energy person you will have a difficult time raising a high energy dog.

The second dog, Sadie shows us what happens when a dog doesn’t have rules, boundaries, and limitations.  Cesar helps out in this situation by setting rules, boundaries, and limitations and also presents Sadie with consequences to her actions.

The third dog, Dixie is uncontrollable on the leash and on walks.  Cesar recommends that Dixie needs leadership on the leash.

Kitty Vs. Guinea Pig

I mostly try to stay on topic (dog’s and puppies, that is), but when I come across some of these pictures I just have to share. Yep, this one doesn’t have anything to do with dogs or puppies, but while I was looking for an image of a Guinea Pig for my post Puppy or Guinea Pig? I came across this adorable image:

Guinea Pig and Kitty, originally uploaded by viking.girl3′s

My mother would have been very upset if I didn’t share. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed your little bit of cute for the day.

Puppy Or Guinea Pig?

Yep, I’m receiving adorable puppy pictures through my RSS feed on a daily basis and sometimes I find images I enjoy so much I just have to share with my readers. While browsing my feed I scrolled past this picture and at first glance thought why is there a guinea pig on a puppy website?

Take a look at the picture:

Puppy Or Guinea Pig?

What do you think? Is this a puppy or a guinea pig? Well of course since this is a site about puppies this is a puppy and a cute little Chow Chow at that. Here’s the details on the Flickr stream:

4th Puppy Born – Boy, originally uploaded by Xianyang Chow Chows – there’s more adorable Chow Chow Pictures here if if you want to check them out.

I had a guinea pig when I was in the first grade (I named him Harry) and for some reason this little Chow Chow reminded me of Harry. So, in my pursuit for knowledge I decided to compare this little puppy to an image of a Guinea pig just to see if this puppy really does look like a guinea pig. Check out this image:

Sorry this was one of the best images I could find of a black guinea pig. This one is also from Flickr: Guinea Pig, originally uploaded by stkali2.

I’m not so sure now, but there’s definitely some resemblance (besides them both being black).

What do you think? Does this little Chow Chow look like a Guinea Pig?

Puppy Helps Decorate The Christmas Tree

More cute puppy pictures from the Puppy Parade. I constantly receive adorable puppy pictures from the Daily Puppy and Puppy Parade through my RSS feed…however if you’re not a Daily Puppy or Puppy Parade subscriber or a daily visitor then you may be missing out on some great photographs.

The Puppy Parade and Daily Puppy can sometimes be cute overload filling my Google Reader with 30+ images a day. If you miss a few days you may have upward of 100 images sitting unread on your reader. Lucky for you I always like to share my favorite images with you right here on the Puppy In Training website.

Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy Review

Just the other night I was at our Guide Dog Christmas party and I saw the Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy at our gift exchange.  This cool little toy is a tiny house with several squeeky toys that you insert through the front door.  It looks much more interactive than any other plush toy we’ve had and I’m very interested to see if my dogs enjoy removing each squeeky object as much as they enjoy removing the stuffing from all their other toys.

Take a look at the Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy:

Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy

On top of being adorable I think my dogs might really enjoy this little house and it’s Gingerbread man.  Hopefully it lasts longer than the other plush toys we’ve had in the past.

Unfortunately I expect durability to be an issue and I’ll let you know as soon as my three dogs have had a chance to tear into this little house.  On a positive note it’s actually four toys in one and at $9.90 on Amazon.com that’s approximately $2.50 per toy.

I have to apologize to Derby because I didn’t have time to pick up a gift for the gift exchange, but there were several fun toys including the Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy that may end up in his Christmas stocking. We’ll have to check with Santa Claus.  Has Derby been naughty or nice?

I’ll leave some comments below to let you know how Gingerbread House Puzzle Dog Toy holds up.  Do any of you have this toy?  If so, did your dogs enjoy playing with it?  Was it built to last?

Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Review Part I

In your household is your dog the Pack Leader? Does your dog jump on you when you arrive home? Does your dog paw you when it’s time for dinner? When you open the front door does your dog walk out first? If you answered yes to any of these questions then Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Set is something you have to see.

I just received the Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Set. Do you enjoy watching Cesar Millan the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel? This DVD set is not exactly like the Dog Whisperer where he goes around to different homes solving problems. It’s filmed in front of a live, interactive audience with practical footage, and also some clips from the Dog Whisperer show to reinforce specific points.

People Training For Dogs – Disc 1

Here’s an outline from Disc 1 of Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Set.

The five section this disc covers are:

  1. Dogs as animals
  2. Dogs as a Species
  3. Dogs as Breeds
  4. Dogs as Personality
  5. Dogs Fulfillment

After I watched disc 1 (twice) I thought to myself…I’m going to make my parents watch this disc. I’m not sure if they’ll follow all or any of Cesar’s teachings, but it’s very eye opening and will help them better train their dog.

5 Important Points From Disc 1:

  • Rules, Boundaries, and Limitations – Your dog must have rules, boundaries, and limitations. As a pack leader it’s your job (the human) to enforce these because if you don’t then your dog will assume the role of pack leader and start setting up his own rules, boundaries, and limitations.
  • Four Levels Of Energy – Very High, High, Medium, and Low – Low and Medium are born to be followers and the high and the very high are born to be leaders. It’s not so much the breed you want, but the level of energy.
  • Importance Of The Walk – a simple walk makes you in tune with your dog. That’s why a homeless person and their dog seem to be so in tune together because they’re always walking together. The owner should be in the front and the dog should be in the back (owner leads the dog).
  • Dog Fulfillment – Knowing how to fulfill a dog properly will give them balance.
  • The Fulfillment Formula has an order 1. Exercise 2. Discipline 3. Affection – this will accomplish what your dog needs. We often times mix up the order in the formula. We need to fulfill our dogs first then ourselves. The Affection is for us (the humans) not for the dogs. The Body | The Mind | The Heart.

Of course there’s a ton of other information besides just what I listed above, but I wanted to share the main points that stuck out in my head.

My Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier as soon as I finish up with this DVD set it’s going to my parents and I’m going to force them to watch all three discs. I was very impressed by the first disc, People Training For Dogs. It covers some key areas that I believe will help both novice and advanced dog owners. The first disc runs only about 45 minutes in length and is very easy to digest in one sitting. I’d recommend any person who wishes to increase their understanding of dogs, dog behavior, dog psychology, and would also like to strengthen their bond with their dog to purchase and watch Cesar Millan’s Mastering Leadership DVD Set Disc 1.

Wait…there’s more to come. Over the next few days I’ll also review Disc 2 and 3.

Top 14 Reasons Why Men Have Dogs And Not Wives

My mother is always wondering when I’m going to get married. I’ve sometime thought this myself and I really have no explanation for why I’m not married…maybe I just haven’t met the right one. Then a revelation hit me (or rather an email in my inbox).

Lets first talk about my dogs…I have 3…Linus, Stetson, and Derby. Linus is an Australian Shepherd mix rescued from the Carson Shelter. Stetson is pure bred black Labrador Retriever and a career changed guide dog. Derby is a yellow Labrador Retriever guide dog puppy in training.

The Boys

Why so many dogs, but no wife?

Well I just received an email that explained the situation to me:

Top 14 Reasons Why Men Have Dogs And Not Wives

  1. The later you are, the more excited your dogs are to see you.
  2. Dogs don’t notice if you call them by another dog’s name.
  3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
  4. A dog’s parents never visit.
  5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
  6. You never have to wait for a dog; they’re ready to go 24 hours a day.
  7. Dogs find you amusing when you’re drunk.
  8. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing.
  9. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, “If I died, would you get another dog?”
  10. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and give them away.
  11. A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a pervert.
  12. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don’t get mad. They just think it’s interesting.
  13. Dogs like to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
  14. If a dog leaves, it won’t take half of your stuff.

I never really thought about it this way, but all very good points. So maybe I’m not holding out, maybe there is a reason why I have 3 dogs and no wife, maybe…

How To Enjoy Your Puppy Toy – The Air Kong

Christmas is just around the corner and maybe it’s time to go buy your best friend a new puppy toy. Unfortunately, I’m not going to go into great detail on puppy toys this time (we’ll save that for another post), but I did come across this great picture of a puppy playing with (apparently) his favorite toy.

My Favorite Puppy Toy – The Air Kong

Toy Joy, originally uploaded by klocean

My guys have that toy, it’s the Air Kong and in case you were wondering here it is:

Air Kong Squeaker Donut Dog Toy, Large

It’s very durable, although Stetson was good (or bad) enough to tear one to shreds. As long as I keep an eye on him and let him just play with the Air Kong and not sit down and start chewing the toy lasts a while and is good for the dogs to have a little game of tug of war.

Does your dog have an Air Kong? What is your dogs favorite toy? Please let us know in the comments area.

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #3

Sorry for the late posting.  I was supposed to get this blog carnival up on Thursday, but I had a brain fart.  I’m going to blame it on my birthday and turning one year earlier.

We had two blog carnival entries this week.  One article covers what’s new in the pet world and the other talks about homemade dog diets.

Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #3

Our first blogger writes about new pet products in the pet industry.  Check out the article here at the Pet Haven website: What’s New In The Pet World.  The article highlights several different dog products including PupSTEP+Plus stairs that are portable with no assembly required.  Linus and Stetson sleep in my bed and I’ve been thinking about getting them stairs to save their joints as they get older.  Another product that is either similar or the same as an item we picked up at the Pet Expo is Pet Top Portable Drinking Device used on the end of water bottles to allow pets to drink from a bottle.  There were many other great products mentioned so please visit What’s New In The Pet World to find some of the latest and greatest pet products.

By the way, I was snooping around The Pet Haven website and came across this great image from Something Doesn’t Belong.  Go to the link and see if you can find out what doesn’t belong.

Our second blogger from the Pinoy Pet Blog tells us about homemade dog diet.  The article: Home Made Dog Diet – Assuring Only the Best Food for Our Pets brings up a couple good points in why it can be very important to give your dog a homemade diet over canned food.  Go check out the article to find out those important points and why you my want to change your dog from canned food to a homemade dog food diet.

Thanks to The Pet Haven and the Pinoy Pet Blog for submitting your articles to the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival #3.  We’ll see you next time at the Puppy In Training Blog Carnival
